They didn’t need to get under it while suspended. Time was of no life-important factor (they weren’t pulling someone out from a near death event [fire/drowning]). They could have waited until wood cribbing was put underneath the suspended crane to support the load.
For us - vehicles jacked up - we can wait until a tire or jack stands are put into place.
