The new Bronco vs. an FJCruiser @3:20, then at 6:45 vs the Wrangler 4XE. I'm sold on EVs, and I think an plug in hybrid is a great idea for a Jeep. A plug in diesel / electric hybrid would be ideal, all day in nature with no emissions, but no worries about how to get home and no major range limit.

Not bad range for what it is, and I bet that gets better in the next few years. I wonder how long it could go crawling a moderate trail before the gas kicked in.

Didn't they say the range was just crazy low, like 3 miles on the trail?

Something I have long been curious about but don't have the physics or experiential background to answer, is will being able to adjust power to each wheel specifically ever perform better than lockers?

I mean, I read that fully locked systems are sending 25% power to each wheel, is there ever a case where sending 30% to each rear wheel and 20% to each front wheel for example would result in cleaning an obstacle you wouldn't otherwise?

Isn't that what brake-based traction control does? If you are fully locked but have a wheel in the air, you can redirect the power away from that wheel to the remaining wheels by applying brakes to just the spinning wheel.

The Jeep doesn't have that ability, it just runs power to solid axles like a regular engine, but some EVs do

In this case, I'd think traction at each wheel would need to be considered. If equal traction, then I'd be OK saying 25% / wheel.

I might say - each wheel has the capability of receiving 100% of the power that is available. If three wheels were suspended in air (or say three were on ice) the remaining wheel (not in the air) would have ~100% of the available power.

When we get to an individual electric motor per wheel - that's when things get interesting.

Brake based traction control tries to do this, but it's really bad at it. Mostly I just want tank turn functionality. Sure, it will chew the trails up a little, and I totally don't need it, but the kid in me wants it anyway.

Can always add 'cutting brakes' to do it....well it won't cause the inside wheels to spin in reverse like a tank could, but will bring them to a complete stop...Saw them work nicely on a built cj3b on the rubicon a few years ago that ran with us. He only had them on the rear...would disengage the rear locker, and sometimes even disengage the front drive so he could pivot around the rear wheel. I didn't think about it beforehand, but its when its absolutely mandatory to have selectable lockers (or no lockers, just open diff) as the cutting brakes won't work with lockers engaged - there has to be differential movement between the axle shafts....I think his were air controlled using the ARB pump used for the lockers....

Check out 2:43, they're laying down while the Jeep drives the trail by itself. I saw in a magazine recently that they've installed a charging station at the Rubicon trail.

I’ve been thinking of doing cutting brakes, partially for tight turns but also with them I think I would almost never touch my rear locker and pulling a lever briefly is a lot quicker than waiting for my slow vacuum operated lockers to engage.

How would you accomplish this? Is there some electronics mod where you can use the ABS system to selectively apply the brakes on a wheel - some button on the dash you could push to lock a wheel?

Hmmm - if going hydraulic... Perhaps connect an electrically operated line lock at the wheels you're looking to control. You'd stop motion, apply brake pressure via the standard vehicle master cylinder to apply all brakes, then while holding the brake pedal, apply the lock to the wheel you wish to stay locked and then release the brake pedal - releasing the other three wheels - with one remaining with brake pressure.

I've considered a hydraulic, cable actuated line lock as a supplement (almost replacement) to the jeep's poor parking brake system.

I've had an EV for a couple of weeks now and it's just a better driving experience than a gas car, especially the acceleration from stopped and the lack of shifting. I'm never buying anything else again. I can't wait for a fully electric Wrangler!!

So many videos to watch! I haven't even seen this one about the electric Wrangler.

I agree Paul, I'm definitely interested in a hybrid or electric Wrangler or Bronco one day. Build some sort of solar panel on the roof and you'd go forever! They're just not there yet in terms of range.
