View Full Version : Need to get on a trail this weekend....

I had a horrible week, my brand new Jeep went in for lift, winch, wheels/tires, some skid plates.... basic stuff. Came out looking great but throwing codes and now in limp mode and going to be towed to dealership to investigate. Not getting into the details until things are fixed and resolved, but super not happy that I cannot even use my new and built Jeep for the second weekend after getting outfitted for wheeling'
Luckily for me, I still have a nicely built TJ and my loved and trusted Powerwagon. I decided to keep the TJ for now since the JL is full of problems at the moment and I don't trust it to pickup some milk at the corner grocery shop (yesterday it went into limp mode every few hundred feet and is un-drivable in its current state).
So, I need to get out to the mountains and wheel this weekend! I'd be up for an early morning MSV/Coney Flats (to avoid crowds), Kinston Peak, Miners gulch (for the TJ) would be fun along with other Rollinsville area trails........
Anyone up for some wheeling' up off the Peak-to-Peak highway? I'm up for either day, prefer early to avoid people or late afternoon run would be cool also!

Might be camping Sat night down near Leadville if we join the Clohesy Lake run. I imagine the power wagon would be just fine for a night of camping on that trail.
If I don't end up going to Leadville, some of the trails you mentioned would be good.

That does suck, hope it's not costing you anything more than time and patience. I'm interested for either day, especially MSV / Coney.

Depends where you want to go, I'm in NW Denver so it might take me some time to get to the trailhead. Whatever you come up with I'll try to make happen, morning or afternoon. :thumb:

Let me find out which day my wife prefers & get back to you. I’d love to run MSV either early or late. 7-730am start would avoid most of the crowds but it is pretty early. 4 or 5pm is when Most others are heading home for dinner and we’d finish around sunset so the lighting would be great. We’d likely see some others but not as much as late morning to late afternoon. Any preference on an early morning or early evening run?

Afternoon actually sounds fun, I haven't been on an evening trail run in a while.

Yea maybe we start around 5 and finish in the dark? I’ll see which day works best for me and let you know. It’s been raining up here all day, and on and off the last few days. The water is going to be deep and the wildflowers are amazing right now! I’m undecided wether I want to drive the Powerwagon or the TJ

There's a "maybe" to me being able to join. The kick with IT is that system changes can happen at low use hours... evenings / overnight / weekends

Sunday afternoon is probably best..... does that work for you Paul? Meet at the MSV trailhead around 4 or 5pm?

That's great, probably the best time for me too. :thumb: I'd bet on a Sunday afternoon it will be empty.

Posted this and haven’t dedided wether to take the Powerwagon or TJ. Maybe if I’m really really lucky, the shop in Fort Collins will fix my new Jeep by the weekend….. crossing fingers but not holding my breath. It’s ready for wheelin but needs to be sorted out big time

I like those Grabbers. :thumb: Whatever you bring will be fine, all your vehicles are beasts. This is one of my favorite trails on the frontrange, I'm looking forward to it.
I remember a couple of years ago these guys stacked a couple of hundred rocks at the gatekeeper to get through.

Yes this is one of my favorite trails also. I anticipate there will be a lot of water crossings and the lake will be the deepest Ive seen in years (based on all the rain we’ve been getting). I’m looking forward to this!

Saw myself in there for a moment or two as well. Yellow jeep on the right just passed the gate keeper. I was standing on the left.

I've had my own nightmare stories with shops lifting Jeeps or even just basic maintenance going wrong. When I heard about you getting the JL lifted I wanted to say we could just do it in my garage like I did with mine but figured you'd just rather have it done.
I once had a Jeep lift go for 3600 bucks and take about 3 months and had nothing but troubles after. If I wasn't a dummy I could have lifted my JL in a night but it took two evenings, no codes all fun. I won't let a shop touch my vehicles anymore unless its something like a tire rotation or a machine shop job.

I'm going to throw out there that if you stack rocks, you should unstack them. I'm sick of people basically paving a road up these trails with rocks. Doing that is not treading lightly!

I just spoke with the dealership shop and they said we’re dealing with a complex electrical issue where something is cutting the power to the fuel system and they can’t figure out why. So they’re getting Jeep engineers involved on Monday. He assured me they’ll get to the bottom of it, but electrical gremlins are the worst kind. And before I had the lift and winch installed there wasn’t one instance of electrical issues……. Hmmmmm

So they have no idea what part of your wire harness they damaged while installing your winch?

Sounds like someone at <shop> is a liar. :lmao:
Shame, that's a nice lookin' ride.

The dealership didn’t install, the shop that installed sent me to dealership after checking things over and saying nothing they did could have caused my problem. I believe no one did anything intentionally but yes, I bet a wire harness or ground was damaged during the lift or winch install. I just hope they find it and fix it for me!

Bad in Longmont. I wear a k95 mask if/when I go out. Yesterday's news said Denver's air is the worst in the WORLD.
When I ran Pierson and Johnny on Friday the air was clearer along pk 2 pk than in Longmont.

Anyone record our track yesterday? A gpx file would be great. thanks!!
Jim
August 9th, 2021, 09:18 AM
Yes. GPS was set to record points at 0.1mi distance on the trail and 1.1mi distance on the highway.
I left a couple track points from the highway on the track. This shows air-down time and air-up time. Trim as desired.

Thank you, Jim. I just replaced my camera that had an issue with an identical one that the seller claimed had never been used, just opened. Turns out he was not lying, when I got home and plugged it in it automatically upgraded the firmware (about 2 years ago they stopped making the camera, I was really surprised it was available and the camera needed it) and I think it wiped my data from the run.
