Not wanting to get caught in a nasty mud slide, lightning storm or torrential rain, we stayed close to home, heading up towards Caribou just northwest of Nederland. We encountered only an average rainstorm coming down the last two miles. It was most annoying at mile 4.8 on the second leg of the trail after the old Caribou townsite. On the driver's side is a drop-off, on the passenger's is a large rockface. Given the limited manuverability, we both had our heads out the window making sure we didn't slide or vent the sheet metal. The last two miles are interesting, very rocky and narrow. It is a good idea to pay attention to the larger rocks on the trail, next to the mountain face, that tend to bounce you towards the slope. As you can see from my pictures, there are two off-camber tippy spots. The one pictured did not require backing but the other did. As GateMonkey was standing outside the truck, asking me about what other shots I wanted of us three-wheeling, we got the loudest clap of thunder and simultaneous lightning we have ever encountered. There were very few pictures taken after that.
This is a pretty, moderate trail.

that use to be a great area to wheel and camp 20 years ago.
nice wide water crossings, great mud and some cool trails all around.

all the cool stuff is closed off now....what a bummer.

but glad you had fun.

There are some neat trails up there. I'll never forget the pinchy spot on Eldorado Mountain. Huge boulder on one side, cliff of death on the other...

Steve, don't mean to be stupid, but that shot looks real familiar. Is Eldorado Mountain's pinchy spot the one I detailed in my post, on the same trail?

It very well could be. The spot isn't too far up from the Eldora town site. (the info kiosk is like a minute away from it)
