I know I should understand this but I don't. I also don't understand the conversion results some sites provide.

My question is this: what real world changes would changing my 4:10's to 4:88's result in? Lower low, lower high, yeah I get that but how much?

I can cruiser at 2500rpm at 60mph, how much would that change?

FYI -

1st - 4.84
2nd- 2.61
3rd 1.51
4th - 1.00
5th 0.84

TIA :thunb:

What gear are you doing that rpm in? 5th? I have a chart on my office wall. Says with 4.10 gears and 33" tires, you should be doing 2,499 rpm at 60mph. IF you keep everything the same, but go to 4.56, that is 2,786 rpms. Everything the same and 4.88 is 2,981 rpms.

Other way to do it is 2,500/4.10 = 609.756

Then take 609.756x4.88 = 2976rpms

Yes, that was 5th gear. Dave, If I throw in a tire size change how about will 35's change things?

Just a FYI - I have the 4:88's in the Pig so cost isn't a big factor because it's spent money already that's going to waste as the Pig sits unused. It also has an ARB in the front which would be nice to put in the 62.

This is math I can understand, thanks!

Yeah, that's what I keep coming back to, 35's and my present gearing would be better. I guess the easy swap of the diffs from one to the other was driving my reasoning more than my sensibilities. :o

I'll have to figure out what it'll take to pull the ARB from the front of the 55 and put it in the rear of the 62 in place of the Lock Right. Feeling the difference with a 5 speed vs the auto also tells me I want to do it before the snow flies.

The love she wants takes more cash than I have :(

Yup, auto lockers and manual transmissions are not the best of friends. Ever thought of parting the pig? The axles are probably worth a decent amount given the gearing and the ARB. Of course, then you are parting the pig :(

The ARB, gearing and work Justin did on the axles would be easy to sell. I'm still trying to find a way to pay for the tranny in my 62. ;)

The love she wants can be sweat equity rather than $... That is how stuff gets done to my rigs!

I have no problem with sweat equity but I spent hard cash on my H55F, sweat equity doesn't pay off Visa :(

now that was said, with so much truth it hurts.

Still don't understand why you just don't swap the axles between the two rigs and put the ones with the ARBs into the one you are going to keep. Seems the simpliest solution to me, at least from a $$ point of view, whether you have to do some mods to the spring perches (or anything else for that matter) or not.

The 55 axles are 3" narrower than the 62, I don't think I want to lose the width or run spacers to compensate.

I have been running 1 1/2 spacers for the last 4 years with absolutely no problems whatsoever. At less than a a hundred bucks an axle, this is certainly what I would do, especially if it meant being able to run ARBs that I already owned.

Yeah, I know but, but, but...

I'll have to do some measuring, the cut and turn on the axle rocks. :o

Try it, i bet you will be fine with 4:88's and 33's, but 35's could be an Easy upgrade if/when you decide to take that step..

it would not make since to swap the housings, Spring widths are different, ect.. Swapping 3rds is Easy, Just Messy ;)

Just swap out the rear one for a week and see how you like it

Are you locked in the front?

I probably will Trevor, these are Mark's old gears and the ARB is in the front. It doesn't look like I'll be selling the Pig so I'll have all winter to try things out.
