Father, son killed as vehicle plunges 700 feet

A father and his young son were killed when a car plunged 700 feet down Windy Point in Garfield County, authorities said today. The 41-year-old dad and the 9-year-old boy were from the Lakewood area, according to a Garfield County news release.
The crash off a back-country trail on the 10,218-foot point was reported at 11:21 a.m., a Colorado State Patrol dispatcher said.
Details on the crash were sketchy, but an adult and a child were found dead in the vehicle, said Colorado State Patrol Trooper David Hall.
Snowy conditions were making it difficult for authorities to access the crash site, nine miles up Transfer Trail, he said.
The accident occurred in the White River National Forest north of Glenwood Springs.
A state patrol accident-reconstruction specialist was assisting a U.S. Forest Service ranger with the investigation. A Garfield County search-and-recovery team was leading efforts to retrieve the victims

I did Transfer Trail last year when I was working in the area, it could be bad in snow conditions. We had all the conditions that day we did it, sun, rain, sleet and snow and I could see it being a risky trail in places... I am sorry to hear of the deaths, when we wheel alone we do take chances even being as simple as a mechanical break down.

From what people have told me, Transfer Trail can get a little tricky when it's wet. Sad news...

The people were identified in the news today. The dad was James Blissett of Lakewood. From what the report said, they went off down the trail from their hunting camp sometime after midnight. Bad time to be doing that. Sucks that it ended so badly.

From RMN Today: the driver's blood-alcohol level was .296% (3x higher than .08 legally drunk) along with marijuana in his system.

Tragic and avoidable fatalities.

I was actually logging on from work to post the update Chris mentioned:
Why did no one stop him? I find it hard to believe that he could have been quiet. Too bad.

Extreme alcohol level, pot found in man who died with son in cliff plunge

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — An autopsy report says a Colorado man's blood-alcohol level was nearly four times the legal limit when he and his son were killed after their car plunged 700 feet over a cliff.
The report released Thursday by the Garfield County Sheriff's Department also says marijuana was found in the body of 41-year-old James Blissett of Lakewood.
Blissett's blood-alcohol level was 0.296 percent, or 3.7 times higher than the 0.08 percent level that's considered legally drunk.
Blissett, who was driving, and his 9-year-old son Jessy were killed just before midnight on Oct. 19 when their vehicle went off the cliff about nine miles north of Glenwood Springs.
