Where to start! Chinamans: 1 US: 0.

Steve (Rubi), Joe (CJ), Jim (Grand Cherokee), Maria (Wife), Patrick (stock Grand Cherokee) and myself (tiny black YJ).

10am we get on the trail, all go's well until we hit Whale rock.

Jim was going up the middle line when he lost the rear wheel drive, and the roof rack broke off the top with the spare on it. AWD transfer case, so we assumed no noise maybe the clutches got to hot. NOPE! I was just like Aarons break, no noise, nothing just no power to the wheels!
We figure we will strap him up and continue on with just front wheel drive and pull as needed. Another mile up the front goes out!!!

Positive side: Steve made the the left line on Whale tail. :thunb: SCARY!!

We decide we should just strap him the rest of the way out. We were sure there would people behind us coming up.

All is ok ,for the next 8 hours we winched and strapped him along. We really needed a Rover yesterday as our Jeeps just didn't weigh enough to pull a Grand Cherokee up some of those hills. At times we had to hook two Jeeps together.

About a mile from the exit Jim hooks a rock and rips a BFG off the rim. Ok no biggie we'll throw the spare on. Guess what?, Every lugnut on the thing is a keyed nut, NO KEY. CRAP!!! Ok, I have CO2 so we hi-lift her up and get the tire reseated, Yeah!! We proceed on, it's now 10pm and we make it down near the parking lot when the driver side rear axle shaft begins to walk out. Dam! So we jack it up again and slide the axle back in, Maria (Jim's wife)walking along side poking the tire back in with a shovel every ten feet.

It was still a great day with friends!!! Big huge thanks to Steve for all his help towing Jim!! I owe you lunch next trip!!

I didn't get alot of pics after everything went south, but I will post what I have later tonight.

Jim also got video of Steve climbing Whale tail.

I am one tired dog today, WE must have pulled a mile of cable throughout the day. Not to mention putting the tree saver on and off at least 30 times. Oh and the strap, On/.OFF shorter longer etc...

I did not want to leave Jim's rig on the trail no matter how long it took to get it to the trail head.

FYI, the trail is much rougher than last time I ran it, some sections I did not recognize because things had shifted around so much.

Absolutely! We had a guy with us in our Moab/Henry Mountains run that got PO'd because we had to change plans when I broke down. He wanted to leave my truck and continue. What a moron, I'm sure it would have been another story if it was his.

Never leave anyone behind, well done Jamie!

It was a long day indeed. But, a fun one nonetheless. Proved a lot. I can climb the left side lines of the rock garden, & whale's tail, (whale's tail has been haunting me since the days of the CJ5) and that the 3.8 under my hood is not a pig like most JK haters exclaim...:D I didn't get home until around 1:10 a.m. because of an unscheduled stop in Fairplay. I knocked the front end alignment out of whack bad enough that the electronic stability program would keep kicking on. (very annoying) Figured I'd check the front LCA cam bolts while I was stopped. The left one spun again... When I get back to work I really need to pony up for the adjustable arms. Anyhow, I didn't get many pictures either. But, I'm glad we got Jim's Grandy off of the trail. No worries about getting me lunch, it's all part of the game. And, I ate half of yours anyway... Now for a few pics!!!

Geez! What a mess. If I wasn't busy on the 1st (family flying in) I definitely would be there as I haven't done this one in awhile. I'd love to see how much it's changed.

Can't wait to see the video of Steve going up the left side!!! I've only ever seen a buggy pull that line.

Glad to hear you made it out and back safely, I was wondering based on the lack of any report last night.

So now is the time to sign up for Saturday's run and change that scoreboard :D

Yes, sorry, it was very subtle.

You coming back out to play next weekend? I might try the Whales Tail, no 80 has conquered it yet to my knowledge :D

Steve, drug his belly a bit as he went over the top, I would think the longer wheel base you have would hang up big time? Post the pics when it happens.
I do know this, I FELT as if I had made it up the left after spotting Steve up. Or should I say "lining him up" because after that it was all comittment on his part!

I'm surprised you didn't get more takers. You posted up almost a month ago... I'd love to come down again on the 1st, but I won't be in any shape to do anything. My friend Sean throws the most outrageous theme parties. With Halloween being on a Friday this year, it's one I don't want to miss.

chinamans sure has been tearing it up lately. luckily i escaped with just a beauty mark, and some custom trail clearance this year.

Yes, I will be there all bright and shiny, determined not to be a trail weenie.

Pathrat - I have done this trail with street tires (factory size), Kevin did it in a stock Discovery, my friend Alex did it in a stock Jeep TJ, a group went up in stock FJC's ... There are a lot of obstacles you can go around.. That is why it is so great!

ive left my trucks 3 times in mountains on yankee hill at the top because i got high centered on snow and nobody i was with wanted to help get unstuck because they did not want to get out of there warm trucks and it was there idea to go, and they wanted me to lead because i know the trails up there really well. I never spoke to any of those people again because i had to miss work and spend the next day shoveling and digging and using a comealong by myself to get it unstuck and leave it again to take the barrowed truck back and wait to get a ride back up to the trck.

Simply not done in my book-you don't leave folks or their rigs. I would've been kicking some ass and doing other damage someone I knew did that to me. I think that you assume some responsibility when you go off road (or into any outdoor environment) for other people engaged in the same or similiar activities, whether you like 'em or not.

Someone is stuck, you ask 'em if they need help and help them if need be. Someone in your party (or another) is broken down, you do the same. Fix it, tow it, winch it , etc. Same with climbing-someone takes a digger and you are there, better figure that your 'day off' playing isn't going to be what you wanted...All part of the sport(s)

I don't know how many times we have stopped and asked someone if they needed help...and helped them if they did. Don't know how many times I have carted out or patched up other climbers, either...

You guys did good on OCG! I can't beleive the damage to the one rig! Thanks for the pictures!
