View Full Version : Tye's New Toyota Disco Bumper

I found this 'hell for stout' bumper on an '86 wrecked IFS 4Runner. Sweet design and a 1/4" winch plate built in. I don't know who made it as I didn't recognize the design, but it is built. The distinguishing features are the two bars on the bottom of the bumper that return to factory mounting holes (3)on each side of the frame-one side mounting behind the steering box and the other mounting on the opposite side. Anyone recognize the design??
Anyway, Tye grabbed it today on my suggestion (for $40), and Sunday we are going to cut , sleeve and weld it up to fit the front of his disco. Should look sweet. We will take some before and after pics on this bit of recycling....Someone might see the bumper and be able to tell who made it. We would be interested...
Now he will just need to hunt for a winch....

Nice find, IIRC Hell for Stout is a Cool Cruiser of Texas (CCOT) line.

Talk to Tye. He spotted at least 3 more Rovers than I did and a couple of Range Rovers to boot. Got the bumper and a side mirror for $48. Hell, we couldn't even buy the steel for the bumper for that, much less get some bends in it.

I looked for rear bumpers for ya Aaaron and there was no luck. Its kinda like finding for a hood for Stellas Monte Carlo..a good one cant be found.
I may be heading back I saw a few odds and ends I would like to have for spares. This bumper should work out good its for sure heavy duty and well worth the 40.00 buck I spent, thanks for the heads up on this one Pete.

Where did you find it?

Colorado Auto Parts, off of Hampden and south of Santa Fe on the frontage road. We might just get Steve a stinger from the same place...
They are getting quite a selection of different makes in there now, too. Lotsa stuff to be found, just give yourself some time ...
Pictures will be forthcoming. We are starting work Sunday if critical repairs don't get in the way time wise. Tye's panhard bracket bolt holes are hashed, so we need to straighten this out first...
There are some Discos down there now, too...

They even had an orange FJ55 there, probably gone by now but that was quite a find for me. Definitely worth stopping in now and then.

Thanks for the pic, must be something pretty old because all the Hell for Stout I've seen don't look anything like that. BTW, that makes it even cooler since it's not something everyone else has or has even seen. ;)

Here are some pics. Tye and I spent most of the day resupporting his radius arm bracket on the front axle to get the wobble out and rebuilding the passenger side. We figured that we oughta do the 'keep it on the road' stuff first...We didn't get started on the bumper until the afternoon. I trimmed off all the unnecessary BS while Tye wrapped up the front end. We then did some measuring to see what we needed to do, cut it in half, sleeved it and added 13" to the whole mess, straightening it in the process. Now the question is going to be whether to mount it the way we fit it or flip it upside down , where it still fits, but looks better... Gotta add a receiver for the removable winch cradle, too.
BTW, interesting style on the bumper with the top and bottom braces tying back into the frame. Homemade job, too, and a royal pain to cut apart...Price was right, though..
Hell for stout was just a way of saying that the bumper was built stout. You should've seen the truck it came off of! The bumper was only tweaked...the truck, especially the front end and cab, was hash. The guy that built it musta used about 10 pounds of rod as it was all stick welded together. We burned up about 10 cutting wheels getting the brace bars and the winch mount off. There was one spot where I had to cut through almost a 1/2"x1/2" section of bead on the winch plate...Could've pulled 10k with that..or more. Probably more, as I have pulled a 30ton Genie lift out of the mud with my rig using only one of my rear attachments...and I felt that I only welded them on 'pretty darn good'....Gonna have a damn fine bumper when all is said and done....

Man I'm a little wore this morning. We got the right front hub seals replaced, panhard mount rebuilt and got the bumper down to more managable size, a few more hours and we can have the bumper all sewn up. I want to thank Pete for all of hard work on Lucy and never being satisfied with short cuts.

We havent done the mount yet, we are still fabing it up...

The mount looks as though it will sandwich the existing frame rails right where the bumper bolted up. We can use all three holes and weld a face plate onto this with a tube to mount the bumper off of. I will then try to use some other existing frame holes or mounts to get another bumper brace going, which it will need. You will see what we did when we post it up...
I would weld the thing to my frame if it was mine as I really do not like bolt on stuff(especially bumpers, sliders, roll bars...), but it ain't mine and Tye might just want to remove it one day....

Tye and Steve came by yesterday and we got the bumper in place on the front of the Disco. We had to do a little more bending and tweaking to get it looking decent, but it came out pretty sweet. It improved the approach angle a great deal and looks good, too. Thanks for your help guys!
Tye and Stve will be posting some 'after' pictures soon.
We used the frame bumper mount tabs and built a wrap around piece that utilizes the mounting bolts and allows the bumper to be removed. An angled piece of tubing goes up to the bumper and attaches there. We still need to rig some angled braces (to give more support) on both the front and rear bumpers. A receiver hitch mount will also be added to the front bumper as well.

All in all the bumper looks sweet, its not all dressed up yet that will happen this afternoon. Pete did a great job concidering what I brought him to work with and having to babysit Steve and I  trying to keep us from poking each others eyes out with sharp objects...:D.
Looks great Pete :2thumbs: now I'm ready for that trip to my grandmothers :drive:

That wasnt just any o blue tape, it is low profile wind resistant marker tape which will help cut wind drag across the bumper which will increase horsepower while adding fuel economy...
