We are helping coordinate the hosting of this event in Colorado on July 18-19th, 2009. I am hoping I can get some help from a variety of 4-wheel drive clubs in Colorado so we can represent a wide variety of interests, vehicle types and driving styles. We are lucky to have a small core group that has already started on the initial planning for this event and we have been fortunate to have raised some funds through a charity event.
Right now I am looking for two levels of interest:
First: A few dedicated folks who can assist with the planning and implementation of the event itself. This team of about ten (10) will need to work closely together to take care of details that include land use permits, insurance, emergency services, transportation, camping/housing, food, entertainment, and locating wounded service men and women who would like to participate, either as drivers or passengers. If you have skills that would help accomplish any of these needs, and are willing to spend time with us doing so, please let me know! Even if you can simply point us in the right direction, any and all support is welcome.
Second: Folks who would be willing to provide a reliable vehicle and passenger seat for a wounded veteran to ride in. We will be looking at a wide variety of trails dependent on the build level of the vehicles we are able to provide. We will rely on these folks to cooperate in groups of around five vehicles with trail leaders, spotters and tailgunners, while providing for any needs our drivers and passengers might need.
Please check the link below for detailed information on the Wheelers for the Wounded program:
www.wheelersforthewounded.org (http://www.wheelersforthewounded.org)
If you would like to climb on board, check out the Colorado section of the forum on the Wheelers for the Wounded site here:
http://www.wheelersforthewounded.com/forum/index.php
Rather than trying to update threads on numerous 4-wheel drive forums, I will be using the Wheelers for the Wounded forum as a nexus for all of this information. I know it is asking something to have each of you monitor another forum, but it saves me the time of looking at what will likely be several at a time! Look forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new folks as well.
Cheers!

Getting together where? I went to the posted link and all I found was a March 22nd date with a 'we are getting together at my house' and no address....
I don't know if I am going to be able to make this Saturday either, but post times and place for those of us who can make it.
I am still in for the actual run, if there is any way that I can make it....

Hello folks!
If you are receiving this message it is likely that you have expressed interest in participating in and/or assisting with the Wheelers for the Wounded event on July 18, 2009. I have attached the details for the event as a Word document. Several folks have already been helping us with the basic plan, but it’s now time to expand and get some additional positions filled.
Most of you have expressed a desire to provide a vehicle and seats for riders and I need to get a few caveats out in the open; most of this is simply for liability.
First, any vehicle participating in this event must be insured, and if necessary, properly registered. All drivers also need to be properly and currently licensed.
Second, we will be conducting vehicle inspections to make certain the basics for safety are operating properly (brakes, seat belts, etc.) Please keep in mind, this is a day for entertaining our guests and is not an appropriate time to test out your new rig or modifications. We want to spend the day wheeling, not repairing!!
Third, we will be requiring all participants to sign a liability waiver.
That said, here’s what I would like to get nailed down next: We are planning to run five trail teams on five different trails in the Buena Vista area. We will be staging at Chinaman Gulch/BV Carnage and will reconvene there again for our evening BBQ.
For each of those five trails I need experienced trail leaders, spotters and tailgunners. I know many of you folks have experience on these trails and I would like to take advantage of that as much as possible. Please look at the trail list and if you know a trail particularly well and are willing to fill one of these position, let me know and we’ll iron out the details.
At your leisure, check out the trails (http://wheelersforthewounded.org/forum/index.php/topic,828.0.html) and let me know what you are comfortable with. Even if you do not want to lead, spot, or gun, let me know which trails you would like to run so I can start putting together the trail teams. I will also be setting up a date for preruns sometime in the next couple of months and it would be great to have any of you join in on that fun. Let me know.
There are alos lots of other areas that we could use help on, so if you would like to offer up some talent in some other realm, please let me know and I'll hook you up!
Thank you all again for stepping up to help make this happen and I look forward to meeting all of you!

This is where we will be meeting at 10am Saturday morning:
This is the staging area for both Chinaman Gulch and BV Carnage. Google Map link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=38.792313,-106.085851&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=16&sll=38.792226,-106.079564&sspn=0.012711,0.027895&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16
We will begin the day with a general meet and greet to make sure everyone has what they need and rigs staged for each of the five (5) trail options. We will have some light refreshments, but I highly recommend a good breakfast before arriving.
We will be running five (5) teams from this staging site to each of the fiver trail options listed above. The folks that opt for Chinaman Gulch will have plenty of time to play on obstacles and check out any action that might be occurring on BV Carnage. It is likely that other trails will have the opportunity to return to the staging area mid-afternoon and Chinaman Gulch and BV Carnage will be a further option if they want more wheel time.
We will have a brief lunch while on the trail. Trail leaders and gunners will have water and some other beverages and snack. If we can swing it, we’ll provide lunch for everyone, but more to follow on that later.
We will return to the staging area after the trail runs and have prepared a “Molly-food” BBQ for all participants. You will want to be there to understand what we mean by Molly-food!
Getting There
These are the two primary routes to the staging site, one from Denver, the other from Colorado Springs:
Via 285, drive time and distance approximately 90 miles in 2 hours:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Denver,+CO&daddr=Unknown+road&hl=en&geocode=%3BFW_sTwId20Gt-Q&mra=ls&sll=38.792226,-106.079564&sspn=0.012711,0.027895&ie=UTF8&z=9
Via Hwy 24, drive time and distance approximately 125 miles in 2.5 hours:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Colorado+Springs,+Colorado&daddr=Unknown+road&hl=en&geocode=%3BFW_sTwId20Gt-Q&mra=pe&mrcr=0&sll=38.838638,-105.325928&sspn=0.812952,1.785278&ie=UTF8&ll=38.919887,-105.46051&spn=0.812023,1.785278&z=10
Vehicle qualifications for moderate to difficult trails:
A good stock rig can make it on all of these trails, but for the purposes of avoiding delays and minimizing potential damage, I recommend the following basics:
33” tires (something that can take abuse, the talus and shale is unforgiving of sidewalls)
Skid plates (factory will suffice)
Sliders
Front and rear tow points
Rear locker
Basic recovery gear suitable for your vehicle
All-weather clothing (literally, it can be 80+ degrees, then snowing in the same day!)
Because of the amount of time we will spend in the rigs with minimal down time, a CB will be essential if you want to keep up with what’s next, when we’re stopping, potty breaks, and details about the trail as we progress (e.g. watch out for the pumpkin buster there… this is freakin’ beautiful!… I gotta pee…)
Camping
National Forest camping:

Curious to hear from those in our group who will be participating what trails you all are thinking of running. I am leaning towards Tin Cup. I hear it is quite scenic and I have not been there.
Erik, I don't have experience on these trails so I have to decline the lead/gunner positions. I imagine the other people going will be more experienced with built rigs. If not, then I would consider lead. Good old GPS.

Tin Cup would be a good one, I haven't done Mt Antero so I couldn't tell you how tight some of the switch backs are and if a long wheel base would have issues, but I have done Boulder Mountain and I am positive you could handle that as well.
I should have opened another thread on this, but I didn't want to clutter the forum with muliple threads and figured what a better place for it then the "WFTW Wants You" thread, but please direct all PMs and questions to me, Eric is extremely busy working on other areas of this event as well as his normal day to day life.

I don't really care what trail I do so long as it is a little challenging and scenic. I also don't care if I am designated a leader, tail gunner or just part of the pack. Bottom line, if there is a place I am needed more than another, just sign me up for that place.
If LaDawn doesn't go, I will have a spot in my rig for a rider. As it is, it is strictly a two person rig. I will post up as we get closer. It depends on her work schedule as to whether she goes or not.

Yes, it seems to be much more difficult finding wounded warriors that would like to participate in the event, since the organizations are not allowed to give us their info. So, we somehow need to make the event info (ie: web site info and flyers) available to each organization and in turn, hope that they disseminate the info and wounded warriors contact us. Doesn't exactly seem like the best way to go about it, but if anyone has some input to offer, just speak out...I'm listening.

Re: Wheelers for the Wounded Suggestions
We hope to have the WFTW flyers printed up shortly. At that point, I will look to circulate them, where ever possible. So, your help then would surely be appreciated.
So far we have been in contact with the local American Legion Post, www.freedomisnotfree.com (http://www.freedomisnotfree.com/), Ft. Carson public affairs/wounded soldier and family info, National and local Easter Seals offices, and various individuals that have connections. If there is anyone here that can help out with this task, please let me know.
Thank you all, :)

How about tv/radio PSA announcements? I don't know anything about how to get that done but should be good material for them.

So whatever happened? Is he good to go?
.
The vet I had in mind when contacting this surgeon has gone back to his home base back east. He did say he would mention our run to his colleagues and I would be contacted if anyone had a candidate. So far, there have been no responses.

I just thought of something...I can get on my hospital web email and send out a mass post with a brief description and contact info. If it isn't allowed, I will find out after the fact. :D
I can do the brief write up and have them email me. Once I get email replies from anyone who knows of a vet who wants to participate, to whom should I forward it to? I know I have asked before, and I have Erik's email, should I send to him or someone else? Please just PM me with the appropriate person.

Sorry folks, I've been trying to keep up, so here goes...
i know radio stations would be all over this like flies on crap especially since it is not fpr profit and it is all volunteer, all the vets need to do is show up and be treated to a good time!
We need to be careful how we advertise this. We will have limited resources and need a somewhat accurate count of who's showing so we can be prepared. If the timing is right, we'll definitely use this resource!

I do not have an accurate count, but I believe about a third of the people driving their own rigs at this point are DAVs or have family/spouse that are. We're still trying to crack the bureaucratic shell, so to speak.

"T-shirts! T-shirts! Get your one-of-a-kind Wheelers-for-the-Wounded shirts right here!!"
We have a screen shop on standby and would like to make the first run of t-shirts for this event. In order to do so we need 40 pre-ordered and paid for t-shirts. It will take approximately 2 weeks for the order to be processed and shirts delivered, so we would like the pre-orders to be in by Sunday, May 31st. We will still be able to take orders for additional shirts after that, but need the initial run to start ASAP!
Shirts are $20 each, and each pre-order will also receive an original Wheelers for the Wounded 5" x 5" window sticker for FREE!
Orders and payments can be made via PayPal to:
wftwstickers@gmail.com
Please provide the following information in the email/detail window at the bottom of the screen:
Full name
Each shirt and size ordered
Contact phone
Email address
You may also pay by check. Make checks payable to COTTORA and mail to:
Jock Timmons
17093 E. 102nd Ave
Commerce City, CO. 80022.
You can either include a note with the above information, or send an email to wftwstickers@gmail.com with the details.
We will deliver t-shirts at either the Buena Vista pre-run on June 21st, or at the Toyota Meet at the Castle Rock Factory Outlet stores on June 28th. We might also be hosting another charity event in mid-June that would be another opportunity.
All proceeds will go to funding the Colorado event food, permits, insurance, and other necessary costs, with the remainder helping Jason stay on the road and fund future Wheelers for the Wounded events.
Thank you all and enjoy the cool duds!

Just to be clear as we had a question come up already, the first image is the front of the T-shirt it will be 5x5" and be dead center of the chest, the second image is the back and the third is the sticker.

As far as I know, the organizers are going to put people where they fit in. They asked me what trails I wanted to run and I told them anything that really qualifies as a 4x4 trail instead of a bumpy dirt road drive with views.
Front Range 4x4, as a group, isn't going to run specific trails as this isn't one of our Front Range posted trail runs, nor are we acting as hosts for the event. We are merely one of the sponsors.
I also told them that I may or may not have a seat dependent on if LaDawn goes or not..
Hope this answers your question, as that is what I am going to do when I get there..just check in..

Hello all!
We have finalized our plans for the event and the attached flier (which hopefully you have seen) has the info. BLM was gracious enough to forgive the permit requirement, but we did sign a Letter of Agreement with a few stipulations:
1. All sites are filled on a "first come, first served" basis. Plan ahead to assure that your group can secure a spot without interfering with other visitors. Parking is limited to 30 vehicles in the parking area only. Access for the public is required, roads cannot be blocked.
2. No Campfires for this event.
3. Proper disposal of human waste is critical. At your activity this will be accomplished by PROVIDING TEMPORARY TOILET FACILITIES.
4. Help us clean up public lands by REMOVING ALL TRASH. Picking up trash left by less thoughtful people helps maintain the scenic beauty of your public lands.
5. If any directional signs are erected as part of this activity, they will be removed at the completion of the activity.
6. There are certain natural phenomenon that could be encountered that present risks which the participants assume. All participants must be advised of conditions which might be encountered.
7. Nothing in this agreement shall be construed to imply permission to build any structure or conduct any activity not specifically named.
8. Disorderly or otherwise objectionable conduct such as harassment of wildlife, livestock, or other lawful users of public land will not be tolerated and could be the basis for denial of similar agreements in the future.
9. Precautions must be made to protect natural resource values, cultural or historic objects, aesthetic values, and any improvement on public lands.
10. If there is any question concerning regulations on public lands, please contact our office immediately.
11. This agreement is not an authorization to use public lands. Failure to abide by all activity parameters in this agreement may result in permits being required for future activities.

Regarding wounded veteran riders: we have not had any direct response to our offer/request for riders for this event. That does not mean we will not have any, just that at this time, we do not know if, or how many potential riders may decide to join us. As a result, the staging in the morning will be on the fly. We will be set up at the staging are at 9:00am and encourage as many folks as can to be there around that time. We will have some light refreshments in the morning and will be organizing the trail runs/riders.
Staging Area: Right now I have 7-10 people helping at the staging area. If there are more folks who are willing to help get us organized in the morning and with the BBQ/cleanup in the evening, I would rather be over-staffed than under, so let me know!
Jason Havlik: As some of you may have heard, Jason, the founder of this event, ran into financial troubles while traversing the nation to promote this event. As of now, he will not be attending our event. If you have any questions or concerns, fell free to contact me directly.
These are the folks who have confirmed that they will be participating. I would appreciate a final confirmation email from each of you just to make sure we’re on the same page. I’ll get with those of you that have not selected a trail in the next week to let you know the plan.

The HIPPA regulations make even inquiries difficult because you are essentially identifying someone by their private and protected medical information, no matter how innocuous or good the cause.

Thanks! For a moment it sounded like something that you would see posted in the rules and regulations at a weight loss clinic run by Lawrence Welk(a)....
And Randy, I agree about the vets. I would be nice if there was a bigger turnout of vets than actual drivers. Anyone from my generation knows what happened to the Vietnam vets when they returned from the war...they were basically ignored, then everyone tried to push them into the background as so much forgotten rubbish...including the government..
Whatever my thoughts are on the war and the 'why' we are involved or how we are dealing with it (let's hear it for turning the Middle East into a searing hot shiny glass parking lot!), these are still our guys over there and deserve our respect and show of support.

I do like your summation. I am sure there are people in the region who are decent people who want to live peacefully with their families, however, they don't seem to be in charge. There needs to be a couple hundred years of catch-up to such neat, modern things like letting girls read and not stoning women for 'dishonoring' the family name.

Well it was brought to our attention that the local station wanted to do it on our last visit in Buena Vista. Prior to that the local stations here in Denver didn't pan out or were unresponsive to our requests for support. I won't go into specifics, but one of them has a morning talk show host who claims to be a wheeler and would not answer email or voice mail, so I heard.
Is it too late? Who knows.

And moving beyond the point of wiping with their left hand in lieu of toilet paper. It takes a very civilized society to recognize this...

This is actually going to be a one day event, taking place on July 18th, near Buena Vista. Many peeps will be getting there Friday, and camping that night.

Alright just a reminder to everyone, this is happening this weekend. A few of us are driving up Friday, setting up at the staging area and camping. May even try to squeeze in OCG at some point Friday.
I don't see this at the top anymore for some reason, but like Jim pointed out this is a one day deal Saturday the 18th.
Look forward to seeing you guys out there.

Sorry about that and thanks for mentioning it! I added a run right after it and missed a " making it not appear.
It's fixed! :thunb:

Thanks Chris, just an FYI for everyone, if you're headed up on Friday and want to hang/camp with the rest of us, we'll be at the staging area which is the entrance to Carnage. From the looks of it after getting everything loaded tomorrow morning we should be there between 2:30-3:00PM.
My cell number is three zero three, four seven six, zero two one four.

I planned on going to this event. That is, until I obliterated my axle shaft. It looked like it was going to be a good time with a lot of good runs.

Sorry we missed you, it went really well and we look forward to doing it again next year.
