I was curious as I had heard many different explanations about the origins of the World Wide Web, etc., so I looked it up. It started out as a military application. Here is the link:

It makes for some interesting reading, especially since it is so much a part of our day to day existence.

It should also be noted that William Gibson, a SciFi writer is credited with using the terms for the first time in a fictional book, Nueromancer, and is also the first to coin the phase "CyberSpace". This was one of the very first 'cyber' Sci Fi books ever written and started a whole new genre of science fiction.

I thought you were going to give a personal experience story Pete. :D

I started using it before Netscape developed the first browser. Ah, the good old days of 2400 baud modems!

Alas, I have no personal experience to relate....

I remember using a 'fast' 24 modem on my dial up years and years ago....And recently actually had to have a dial up connection in the foothills until I moved down into town. We were in a little valley, just out of station range, and there were no lines anywhere....Talk about slow...I used to brew coffee waiting for stuff to start happening and read books while pictures downloaded....

My first account was 2400 baud connecting through a long distance account at a college a couple hundred miles away courtesy of my brother who worked there and introduced me to the web. I primarily used Gopher developed by the University of Minnesota to get and send files. I believe I still have my beta version of Netscape somewhere in my old disks.
