Johnny Park was closed so we did Pole hill then Rock Creek, then Bunce and the Iron Clads on both sides, then drove back down to Boulder via Gold Hill and Sunshine Cyn. It was freezing rain and snow at the end of Bunce and part way down to Boulder. Other than that we had great weather. Kind of a pain airing up in freezing rain.

All the trails we did we awesome especially the back side of the Iron Clads. It was incredibly beautiful.

We didn't up Rock Creek too far after we hit the snow pack. The snow was heavy and over 2 ft deep. Swath seamed to make it further up with his new Swampers at 8 lbs. Then We aired down to 6 and made it a bit further but was turned around in short order.

It was fun anyway and we found some rocks to play on on the way out.

Ya, twas a great ride. Pole Hill was new for me.

The trail to the top of the Ironclads was closed which bummed me out, that was a great spot with a great view.

I'll post up a few pics when I recover, arms are too tired from sawing that wheel back and forth all day.

A pile of pics in my photobucket:

Hey -- I was the guy in the Blue JK Wrangler Unlimited that let you pass on the way down FR217 exiting Bunce School Road area to Hwy 72.

Had my brand-spankin-new Midland 75-822 handheld (just came in the mail this morning) and got excited when I saw your antennas. What channel were you on?

Hope you had fun. I got out with the kids a bit later than I expected. Our original plan was to hit Ironclads and Pole Hill -- never made it. We took FR217 from Hwy 72 up to Bunce School Road but turned around where FR216 heads up to Ironclads because it started raining pretty good and I don't trust my stock Goodyear SR-As in any mud.

Saw a few bighorn sheep on the way back down Hwy 7 towards Lyons. The kids thought it was great.

Saw you guys airing up on Hwy 72. Should have stopped to introduce myself. Maybe next time.

Cool, you should have just opened your window and I would have chatted with ya when I passed by.

We were on channel 1, just cause that is the channel KB's cb defaults to every time he turns his rig off.

We all got stuck in that snow, we gave it a go but it was just too much for us.

Looks like you guys had fun.

Just a heads up though, I heard that some of the residents up around Ironclads threw nails out on the trail to deter 4 wheel drives from going up there, I also heard the forest service made them clean them up, but the last time we were up there someone picked up a couple, so you may want to check out your tires.

No one got a flat. We realized that the trail may not be open to the public anymore and we turned around. It was hard to not continue on.

Another 10 hr day in the saddle. I was beat.

Today I get to do a bolt check then take the boys to the airport for their return trip to Neb.

Looks like fun! I was wrenching so couldn't make any of the runs today!

So the report of the nails...was that at the start of the Ironclad Trail or the start of Bunce school? Reminded me to bring my big magnet with the handle the next time I am in the area...but it would be nice knowing where these folks put the nails out..

There is now a sign that says you are entering private property at the top on the left spur. If you take the right spur you return to Bunce eventually.

Oh...paint the nails a flat black or tan color and huck 'em into THEIR driveway...some quick tack welds and you have a tripod of nails that always have a point sticking up....Why remove them? Simply move them to a point where they should go....

Gee...did I just suggest that? OK, OK...I'll take my 15 second time out and won't complain...

Was the trail to the top a FS closure or just some trees that people had moved across the trail? The obstacle at the top of the hill was supposedly closed at one point, but it turned out that another club had just decided that no one should do the obstacle and moved trees across it. We moved them out of the way again years ago. It could be the same case with the closure at the top...No signie, road open as far as I am concerned...IF the FS can spend $$ closing trails and putting in gates, they can spend money for signs showing this...

It was on Ironclads, but where exactly I couldn't tell you.

Sorry Gecko Cycles, don't mean to hijack your thread.

We saw the trees blocking the trail at the top when we where there.

I saw this posted a few days ago on COTTORA, about the Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) that the forest service is using. Which basically tells you where you can and can't go there doesn't necessarily have to be a sign telling you either that the trail is closed, not arguing with you Brody just pointing out what they have done to cover their butts. Apparently if it's not on the map it's considered closed.
Not sure if you're familiar with the Baldwin Lakes trail down in Buena Vista, but according to this map http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/psicc/maps/mvum_sal09_draft.pdf the trail ends at the lakes and doesn't continue up to the old mine. We were up there last July and there was no sign stating that section was closed. According to this link http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/arnf/recreation/travel_mgmt/mvum/index.shtml the MVUM is part of the 2005 Final Travel Management Rule, so if that's the case we were up there illegaly without knowing it.

Oh, I happen to be very well aware of the 'if it doesn't have an FS sign, it doesn't really mean it is open" stuff. I am simply stating that I don't feel like playing their ******* games. If the FS can afford to spend money for trail closure signs and expensive trail closure gates, then they can damn well spend a little more of our tax $$ on some more signs. Other than that, if the trail looks open, has no FS signs stating otherwise, has no Private Property signs, then I, for one, am going to run it if I feel like it. If I get popped, I'll argue with them about it.

That whole law is too close to the 'no knock' law and allows government agencies a little TOO much leeway in individual interpetation in my book. And one thing I am really not a big fan of in any way, is any government agency not having some pretty defined laws to follow...after all, we pay their salary...'for the people'...my ass...

I couldn't agree more with everything you just said! :thunb:

They were signs posted, not just trees blocking access.
