View Full Version : On Board Air Installation Articles and Links

Here are a bunch of OBA articles and links of all kinds. Many of them deal with turning a basic A/C compressor into an on board air source. The two junkyard compressors commonly used are the York and the Sanden. The York is probably the most common, is engine driven, and can be found in junkyards for around $30. The Sanden is a 12V compressor that is not engine driven and is found on many Cadillacs from the 1980s. It can usually be found for around $15 at junkyards.
Converting a Toyota A/C compressor into an OBA source is very similar to doing the York compressor conversion..WITH ONE MAIN DIFFERENCE. This is important, too. The Toyota compressor relies on the oil in the AC fluid to oil the Toyota AC pump. Without it, it will freeze up very fast. The addition of an inline oil mister is critical to doing this conversion. This mister installs on the air inlet side and is adjusted by an allen head screw in the top to control the drip. Regular AC oil, available through NAPA...use the generic 100 weight...is what is used for the oiling.
Hopefully, these links will answer any questions and give you some good ideas on doing your own relatively cheap OBA.

Additional sources. May be some duplications:
There have been some inquiries about doing OBA. These are also posted in various other spots on the forum, so there may be duplications. A large number of these links deal with using existing AC compressors on your rig, or regular vehicle AC compressors, and many also deal with using various after market or air compressors designed for other uses, such as the Caddy suspension compressors. Here you will also be able to source cheap components to build your own CO2 tank OBA system.

There are a lot of Jeep OBAs designed around either a York or Saginaw AC pump listed here. These are not based on a Power Tank or ultimate Air set up, but rather around revamping the AC pump. Aside from the fact that you have to use on in line oiler for the Toyota AC compressor, all the rest of the information works with any AC pump. Saginaws and Yorks being the cheapest and most readily available due to the fact that most American manufacturers used them in everything-trucks and cars.

I hope all this information helps. As you can see there is an absolute ton of information out there on it, for tanks, and also using either an existing or a piggy back (as in the case of Toyota..BudBuilt.com used to make a piggyback York bracket for a Yota) York or Saginaw AC unit. I would read what is there, make note, especially on any troubleshooting issues, and build it up. Remember that someone has done it, sorted out the problems and also written about it...somewhere. You don't have to reinvent the wheel....
