First off, half of my pictures disappeared. New camera, new user of said camera so I have no idea what happened.

Second, and more importantly, thank you to the excellent spotters. Funrover saved me from ripping off my passenger rear window and panel, among other parts. He also helped me get rid of an unwanted passenger: a rock wedged under my sliders. Jamie made sure that I didn't smash my front end into a giant rock I thought was a lot further away and a lot smaller, and made sure I didn't rub my lights and corner bumper off on a tree. Joe too, thanks for telling me what to do and not do on the hill. Of course, thanks to the guys who winched me up when I slid off the trail and the guys with the shovels!

I found this to be a very challenging trail and it was sometimes difficult to take in everything that was going on. It seems that everyone shed blood on the trail or at least is taking home a good bruise.

Great time, great day and great people, once again! Nice getting together with everyone from the Springs group! Seems like we never see enough of you guys.

This trail was a lot harder than when LaDawn and I ran it last year. It certainly wasn't a 'giveaway' and it seems liked we worked for pretty much every foot we gained, especially on the many obstacle sections. It says something about both the driving and spotting skills that we got that many rigs through the trail with only cosmetic breakage..

The dusty conditions made me appreciate what the Baja and Dakar drivers do. Being at the back of the bus most of the day, we felt like we needed to do a drive through car wash, even without the doors. The last picture shows a 'back of de bus' picture...

Here are a bunch of our pictures

Those are all some great picts that really tell a story.

The off camber section gave everyone a little trouble. The road just sloped off into the trees. Everyone was crabbing their front tires to stay high enough to keep from sliding..sometimes it even worked. By the time we got though, there was a trough for your front uphill tire to ride in and a built up berm to snag your rear tires before they traveled down the slope. Stephanie kinda got in the middle section before we dug a path through the snow and before we built the berm...

There was evidence that many rigs before us had a lot of problems on the same section. The whole hillside snow melt ran off down that side of the hill, covering the road under the snow so that the 'snow' was very icy and hard packed. Perfect angle, too, for scooting your front end sideways...

And the Scout that was on the side of the trail provided even more entertainment as there wasn't much room to get by. Luckily, it's drivers side front tire was sticking out just enough to bounce off of, rubber to rubber, for quite a few of us...

We later ran into the folks doing the Scout recovery (nice looking Scout, too) and I think that a couple of those guys signed up here yesterday or today.

And don't you love the economics? We wouldn't have been able to go if I hadn't sold the bumper off the 84....

Funrover
May 18th, 2009, 09:28 AM
would my truck been able to get through there?

Yes and no. For the full size rigs this is a really tricky run. The trees up top get narrow in a hurry. Can you make it..Yes but in some sections you have a 1 time only shot or you will have body damage. If you want to do this trail I would get bumpers and protection like the dakota that was there. Also run it reverse the first time. GM4X4LOVER would be a great person to talk to about this, he manages to always get his Suburban up the trail just fine! :thunb:

Brody
May 18th, 2009, 09:32 AM
would my truck been able to get through there?

Homey got his Surburban through it, but it was locked in the rear and he didn't seem to care if he got body damage. Seangillis11b got his extra cab Dodge through it with no grief.

I would say that it might have been a challenge higher up where there were some tight spots between the trees and a couple of tight turns, but with a little careful driving and spotting and a couple of backing and tacking to get lined up, you would've been ok. Would've been a bit of a challenge, but that's part of the game...

Dry, with the exception of the tight spots, you probably wouldn't have a problem. Everyone had a bit of an issue with the off camber icy stuff as well as anything that had ice or snow on it. Rails would be almost essential...and a winch would be a definite asset...

Brody

I have yet to touch a tree or a rock. Even when i was open/open.

Not to be the irritating SOB that a lot of people think I am, but almost all of the trails I run I usually touch quite a few rocks... mainly with my tires, but harder trails...well, there are rocks..like sticking up...and..well...kinda everywhere you look or want to go. Sometimes the trails almost require that you tag 'em..hopefully with just your rock rails...

As to trees...you do any kind of snow run, especially on trails that have tree to one side or another and more especially on harder trails where it is off camber and icy and narrow...hey...you are going to hit a tree or two....and maybe a hidden rock or two..

Granted, your driving skills may be exemplary and you could probably teach everyone on this site many, many driving techniques, no matter how many years some of us have been driving off road, but it has been my experience that if you want to do harder 4x4 trails, you are going to hit rocks ...and trees....and go through mud...and drive over logs..Tis just the nature of the beast..Oh..and if your driving skills are that good, maybe you should get a hold of Pathrat and schedule a clinic so that those who are interested can attend...I am always ready to learn something new..

Oh...and I applaud you if you have managed to wheel a lot and have managed to not hit anything...Maybe I am just a sloppy driver, but if that is the case, there are an awful lot of sloppy drivers on this site(and there are not) and amongst my other wheeling friends. I got my first 4x4 when I was 17, and have been wheeling ever since...that means that I have been wheeling one type of terrain or another, dependent upon what state I have been living in, for 40 years...open/open or locked F/R...I have also done my fair share of 2WD wheeling...and managed to tag stuff doing that, too..Maybe I have been doing it all wrong...

This is kinda like saying"Man, I am one badass rock climber, but I never touch a rock". Know a few people like that, too....

Despite what Brody says in his interesting post, making several valid points, I am glad I did NOT get any damage this time. I don't want damage anytime, but accept that this is part of the possibilities when wheeling. There are just some times when I am less tolerant of potential damage than others.
Again, excellent spotting by those who undertook that task.
