Andy Josh and myself once again one of those 2 hr notice rides. LOL
This time we went up 286C from the upper entrance. It has alwasy been snow, ice or mud covered when I've tried it in the past and couldn't hold my line. This time it was dry and there was someone to go with so we gave it a whirl. It is fairly steep, loose and rocky.
We got to the top and turned around and came back down instead of doing the loop. Andy couldn't make it up and we didn't want to leave him.
Josh was low on fuel so we told a few lies at 5 points and called it a short day. 286C was enough. Josh's hands were shaking pretty bad after coming back down. I think he saw god! He is in need of gears so he can stay off the brakes on the DH and my tires are about shot. !.5 years on a set of Trxus M/T's is a bit much for me. OUCH!

Wheelin is a game of inches.

Thanks for the pictures!

I love my dual cases for the low range. I ended up with a 244:1 crawl ratio and when I went down that hill last time, I just crept down it in low/low just for grins. My ratio is so low that gravity was actually causing my tires to slip on the rocks, much as if I was on the brakes.

Would have been a lot spookier without the low gears. That thing is STEEP! I never would try it if it was icy...you would just end up bouncing off trees...

I so want a doubler but at well over $2000 it is just not going to happen.
If you put in a Kick motor, trans and T-Case you can add a Sammy T-Case which will give you lots of gear and still have a 1:1 on the Kick Case for the road. That is a lot of work too. Putting dual T-Cases on a Sammy will net you a very low highway gear because there is no 1:1 option on a Sammy case. Putting a big enough tire on to compensate for that is not in my plans as it would require 100" WB.

That nose down with a rear wheel in the air thing could make anybodys hands shake, and for good reason.

Git you some low gears Josh :wrench:

I have dropped a tire in a hole and done the balance thing. Takes a few rides to shake that off (for me anyway), for a while after doing something like that it feels like any little off camber is gonna throw ya over till ya get your feel back.

I aint afraid to say, that chit scares the bejesus outta me ... Full cage and 4 point harness would be nice for that kind of fun.

I find it interesting that even with my 6.5:1 low range xfer case I still find myself wishing for another gear or two below 1st on occasion. Black Bear Pass was one spot I wished for lower, dropping off that small face on Mini Moab was another, and right there is another likely candidate. I need to git my 4.30s installed.

Josh was actually posing and showing off. He gave me his camera. I lent mine to Andy who showed up as this was going down.

I was joking when I pointed to that hill when Josh came up... Then he went right up it!

Glad my sammy was in the garage with the motor out. That hill is a bit much for 80" wheelbase!

Machinist called today, ordered my pistons and main bearings. Woohoo, things are moving. I should be up and running in two weeks.

Also ordered a rev limiter. Hopefully I can make this engine last longer than 5 months.

I made it up and down without those issues. My tires are hurting so up hill traction is going away for sure. You just can't stop in the middle of the DH. Gears Gears Gears sure helps. Josh will get there soon I'm sure. He has gained much confidence since his trip to Moab.

Good to hear about your motor.

I sold my van today and got the asking price with no questions.

Hey all,

Definitely pooed my pants a bit when that first happened. Its funny because it happened a bit higher up the hill too but not as bad, and then my dumb as went down the wrong side further down. Its definitely a steep hill and there are some holes in that will screw with you big time. There is a hole on the right side looking up right at the bottom that could make it very significantly harder to get up for anything much wider then a Samurai. Anyways, I scared myself pretty good but had fun doing it. Just glad I didn't roll it and get to find out how the cage I bought works. Here are some pictures:

The spot where I nearly rolled was right next to the 3rd post up the hill

Hehee.....once it was relatively stable I was fine if a bit nervous. It was the initial "getting to be in that position" that sucked and I had my "oh ****" face on. I'll say that as much as I was nervous and freaking out a bit there, its 1000 fold difference to how I was this time last year. I actually locked up and couldn't get my hands to move on one much much less scary hill/trail then that.

Sounds like I am going down to the Springs tomorrow afternoon to have RocFrog help me out getting my rear diff welded up. Should make those kinda climbs alot better, especially with some lower gears. Thats definitely in the works and I'll be getting them as soon as I can afford it. Here are a few more pics of KB doing that hill and a smaller obstacle a bit further up.

Killer picts Josh!
No doubt that you have vastly improved from last year.
Good luck on the Lincoln Locker. Be sure to rotate the tires every 500 miles.
