Metberry Gulch 6/7

Got the few pics I took off the camera from our run on Metberry Gulch today. I do have videos of the actual trail to come - just need to edit them first.

Rob has more pics that he'll hopefully share later.

I am a bit disappointed that we didn't get any pictures of the TReg three wheelin' - I was driving, but from what I know it was pretty impressive. The wife shot the video, but as soon as the front dropped, she about flipped and dipped the camera. We'll be sure to take still's next time.

I'm sure Brian, Jake, and Rob can attest to that.

The parking area down by Platte river is very very nice. Lots of grass and shade. During the entire trail, you could see the devastation from the fire. There is lots of new growth which is great to see. At the same time - with a lot of the trees bare, it makes for some awesome views that you might not have been able to see before hand.

oh yeah that vw was in some tight spots. at one point i think the back wheel was about 2 feet off the ground. with no issues other than the old lady flippin out

even beat up the rusty heap some more. all the trees that burned in the hayman fire are still standing or layed out everywhere, so there are a lot of them laying in the trail still. we meant to bring the axe and saw and try to help clear some of that stuff but we forgot. i guess that means we gotta go back up!

I am glad you guys had a good time.

I have spent a lot of time in that area doing technical rock climbing. The trail goes down past Big Rock Candy Mountain (unnamed on the map..this is the climbers name for it) and is one of the biggest rocks in the South Platte valley at 1300 feet..Most of the rocks you see on the trail I have climbed or put up new routes on...cool area...

Hacket Gulch (closed right now) is the trail that you see on the opposite side of the river and Longwater Gulch is also in that area. We used to do climbs on Tick Dome, the rock across the river from Metberry, by accessing them from the west side. You could actually drive right to the top of that rock and camp.

Good fishing, too, if you walk the river north back towards Cheeseman Reservoir and Big Rock, much like you find on the Gill Trial, which is on the north side of the reservoir....big rocks in the river, not too many people, quiet...

it was agreat trip. and hackett looked to be open now as well. it appeared to have been cleaned up by predator off road since the sign for the trail was made by them

Hackett is interesting as far as being open. The word was out for volunteers for reopening Longwater first. I'll see what I can turn up and post it.

Don't know if you are kidding or not...but, yes, it does have a low rating. Almost any stock rig can do it and years ago (pre Hayman Fire) we did it in a Mazda 2WD pick up with a little pedal to the metal driving....

Na it was a smooth ride mostly. But every once in a while there was a bit of a test. one of the bigs surprises was the compulsory slick rock slab at about 30plus degrees with a sharp bumpy turn at the bottom. The Reg was sliding a good portion of it. Disaster is possible if momentum is gained past a threshold.

That slab is fun...but I can see where a newbie could be scared. However after you make it you really feel a sense of accomplishment in a way. For a Sunday Stroll I really like that trail!

I had the wrath of my wife to be scared off :lol:. A 5300 pound vehicle down a slope such as that slab - you know it's either gonna go really fast and then bounce at the bottom or slide. I decided for the slower decent - less chance of running into the heap of dirt at the bottom - not to mention the huge log.

I really need to put the 'Reg on a diet!

On Moody/Crystal my wife thought I was slow in getting to my truck so she took it over the obstacle herself. It was the first time she drove it since we swapped the auto tranny in favor of a 5 speed. Pretty sure I made a noise or two. :lol:

That slab is called "chicken scratch hill"...My son and I really enjoyed that trail!!!

That slab is called "chicken scratch hill"...My son and I really enjoyed that trail!!!

Actually, Chicken Scratch Hill is the steep, loose, gravelly section a little ways down and around the corner from the slab. It's not much of an obstacle now but, in the days before Hayman, it had some very large moguls and much more loose gravel so it could really cross up open diffed rigs.
