View Full Version : Hood vents in Brody's heap

So I was reading about how hood vents help keep the underhood temps down and was looking into these for my heap. I found that there are companies that sell these for $150-200, a little bit beyond my resources. I decided to go to the junkyard to see what actually came with hood vents that I could use. Well, I didn't find any hood vents on anything there, but what I found was some grill vents off of a Pontiac.

I pried these out with my pocket knife, took them home and had them installed and painted in less than 1/2 hour. I am not going to measure the temp difference (who cares...it either works or doesn't), but after I took it for a ride, I could feel the heat pouring out of them.

Total cost...and I already had the paint...was $4.00 plus tax. They even look pretty good...

Anyway, a cheap alternative to expensive vents and a (I assume) decent way to get rid of some of the excess heat.

Those look real good!...Specially along side of your cowl...Is the cowl Functional?..if so, did you just use a fiberglass one and mold it into the hood?...

Thanks...The hood is functional and is needed to clear the supercharger. I used an off the rack Summit Racing ABS hood scoop, but since I am going to raise the engine, tranny and transfer case, am planning on using the ABS one for a template to make a taller fiberglass one. It is just riveted to my fiberglass hood at the moment and has been like that for four or more years..

Well, I had just given Sean the last of my expanded metal to use and needed to do something. Soon I will get to see how bad I am at fiberglass work...

Pete, I have plenty of it left if you want the rest back. I can run it over to you today since it does not look like I will be going to argentine pass.

Thanks, but just hang on to the expanded metal for a bit in case you need any more. It was just a thought tto use for the vents if I didn't find anything else. Now I have some cool Pontiac vents on my heap!

Might just take you up on the offer of fiberglass help, Randy. Sean has done a little, I have done less than that. What I need to do is to use the same hood scoop that I have as a mold, but add an inch or two to the overall height..

Lebarons are good source of vents. Looks good, and if they work even better.

Thanks for the tip! I knew I had seen them on something, but not what. After walking around the full lot at U Pull It, these were what I found. I liked walking around the lot anyway...cheap therapy...and actually found that a SAAB intake off of year unknown...will work for a snorkel if I ever want to do a snorkel...

Looks cool, quick and functional too.

U-Pull-It is like the coolest place. Kid in a candy store. I could spend my life there.

Nicely done, I see that a lot with the XJ's the most common being vents from LeBarons.

No, they are Grand Am vents. LOL

You came up with the same idea and published it first. Tha's OK Pete, I have been looking at these for some time now and I have a few other tricks up my sleve. ;)

The Turbo Lebaron vents are easy to mount and sit flat, but are few and far between. I've seen sets on craigslist for $50.

OK...out of touch with the 'car' world a bit, but doesn't Pontiac make the Grand Am? They did say Pontiac on them, after all...BTW, there is another set at U Pull It...somewhere...I know I saw two sets...
