View Full Version : I know there is a story to go with this...

And I'd like to hear the story(s). LOL
Seriously though, I got this from Sean. He said it needed work, but I didn't ask. So now that I have it home, I'm looking to replace bearings and seals at the least.
So if you know, what kind of car do I order bearings for? If I need spindles, what kind of minivan do I look for at the boneyard?
Thanks, Mike

If you can find the seals, the bearings should match. I would try to just re-pack the bearings if they are still decent. Of course the seals will likely get torn up getting it apart, so you have to at least find those.

HAHA i recognize that. oh yeah sean got that from me! LOL. Sorry I really can't help you find parts for it. It had been sitting on my property for quite sometime before sean thankfully removed it for me.
HOWEVER there is a good story that I can tell you about it. Back in 2005(?) Funrover needed to go and get his '65 Dodge pickup. It was located up in sterling at his (then) girlfriends house. So we loaded up his rover and hitched that dolly up to it and drove up there. Well his Dodge is such a fat pig that the wheels didn't fit where they are supposed to. further the fenders just barely cleared the fenders on the trailer. So being the rednecks we are, we decided that this truck is getting back to CS. We went to wally world got two more 3" ratchet straps, straped the axle from the truck down to the axle on the trailer. threw a come-along on there, and threw some straps over the tires, and headed down the road. Well... 7 1/2 hrs later we got back with the truck in one piece.

Thanks for the response!
So I'm guessing that '65 did not have a tow hitch...or valid plates?
It was a ++ for me. I have to move a couple disabled vehicles in the near future, and I got rid of that trailer that has been sitting ever since I moved here. :D
Anyhow,ol' green is still in the family. I don't know how it sounds to everyone else, but the noises really resonate through my XJ. I'll have a look-see tomorrow.

Hey i'm just glad it's getting used. No sense in it just sitting and rotting away in a field.

So Mike was momma upset that you brought that one home? I am planning on getting started on the one you gave me after the cage and 57 are done so WINTER project! I forgot to ask you if you think those leaf springs would ok for my SAS.

She asked me why I didn't bring home $$$ instead (I've been hawkin stuff on craigslist to fund the '97), I didn't answer that one. I told you I was to the point of asking you to just come get the thing. Two weeks ago she would have asked me how soon you were getting here?!?! So I guess cash value is relative to the moment. LOL
I forgot to ask you if you think those leaf springs would ok for my SAS (http://www.frontrange4x4.com/forums/vbglossar.php?do=showentry&item=SAS) http://frontrange4x4.com/forums/images/misc/vbglossarlink.gif (http://www.frontrange4x4.com/forums/vbglossar.php?do=showentry&item=SAS).
I think those springs are pretty light to do much of anything with. It's very first chore was to bring home a load of manure. Stuff was dry, so not that heavy, and filling the box level with the sides had it on the bump-stops.
It does settle down and tow nicely. I think the topper did catch some wind behind the Cherokee, not a problem behind the F-100.

Nope, there was no pull bar on the front, didn't have current (or even close to) tags. It was towed out from behind a car lot with a missing freeze plug and 3 flats. LOL

The saga continues...
I lucked out with the bearings and seals. I cleaned and repacked the side with no dust cover, and bought a cover for it. The other side I just tightened up. With the exception of measuring and cutting steel, I let it sit until this weekend.
Since I couldn't settle on a track width, I decided to make it adjustable to a point.
Off with the old, fit the new:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/UPLOADS426.jpg
I thought it wasn't quite straight before. The flat plate really showed me how much the ends are bowed. Prepped to weld:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/UPLOADS427.jpg
I discovered it would stand on the fenders. Nice for welding, nice for storage. :)

Lets not forget those ramps:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/UPLOADS430.jpg
I'll finish up the securement and make storage for the ramps. Then it's off to collect spare parts. :)

Turns out it's not wide as I thought. It took a little persuasion to get the front tires into the wells for the ride home...
down Golden Gate Canyon...
at night...
after dark...
where no one could hear me...
no one would come...
It was a pretty harrowing maiden voyage. I finished the night thinking "I'm getting too old for this ****!"

Looks like we need to straighten the main cross bar some to widen out the platform more.

Yep, I was thinking of driving wedges to straighten up the camber a bit, then adding gussets front and back. Since I have to cut all that weld to reposition the plates, I might as well stretch the width.

The whole escapade came about because I pushed my scheduling to make this trip. I went up late in the day with equipment that was untested, and virtually unknown. I did the exact opposite of what I would advise someone else.
Just to add to the general feel of the trip, there was a 50 yard red streak on the pavement. It started on one side of the road, veered across both lanes, in and out of the opposite ditch, and ended on the side it started. I'm guessing something big hit an Elk. Something to keep in mind when you need to allow extra braking distance, in the night, in the dark, where there is no cell signal....Bwahahahahaha!

I got the second Comanche down from Golden Gate Canyon tonight. Other than trying to stop on dirt once, it was a slow and un-eventful drive.

After getting some chow in my belly, I went out to unload. I quickly learn this home made dolly doesn't like U-turns.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/UPLOADS467.jpg
Now it was nice that it broke down at home. After the fact, all I could think about was the Mrs giving me dirty looks for dragging it home. It breaks in front of a retired firefighters home...and still reeks from the beer can collection the PO stored in it. :o
I worked silently, in the night, in the dark, hoping no-one would hear, no-one would come...
A different neighbor helped me unload the dolly. After parking the truck, I slung the broken dolly from my tow hitch and towed it to it's parking spot.

Every time I put a vehicle on this thing, I remember that a '66 Dodge pickup rode on it.
I had a notion to widen it enough for other rigs. Now I question every notion that bubbles to the surface of my conscious mind.

So was that Originally Home made?
Yes, I think it was purpose built to a car that actually ran. Since I had to pick up some cars that don't run, I reworked a thing or two.
Now that I finally have all these parts-n-parts vehicles moved, I can give the poor thing a rest. :p

The adventure continues!
My bud brought 'ol green up from Aurora to take my newest Jeep to the car wash for a de-greasing session. When we got there we noticed the wheels had shifted. We also noticed I had forgot to unlock the steering wheel, which finished off the steering column.
Before:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/HPIM1595.jpg
After:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/HPIM1620.jpg
We redid the wheel straps and went really slow on the trip home. As we pulled onto my street, one of the straps came off, letting the Jeep roll forward off the dolly. Instead of blocking the entrance to my (dead end) street, we drug the jeep 70 feet to the house. As my bud pulled up to the curb, there was a loud POP! One of the welds on the original frame had cracked.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/HPIM1611.jpg
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/HPIM1613.jpg
As we started lifting the Jeep off the dolly, the cracked weld was revealed as a broken weld.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/HPIM1614.jpg
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/HPIM1616.jpg
At this point I was remembering following him on the highway and thinking that 'ol green was looking pretty scary. I had even thought about cutting it up and tossing it in the scrap trailer.
Well, its on, like Donkey Kong!
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Jeep%20stuff/HPIM1617.jpg
As we drug major sections from under the Jeep, I was wishing I had not added so much weight. I cut it into manageable sizes.
