Talk about frustrating....

The trail wasn't too hard.
My clearance was good.

Ya wanna know what made me turn around? IT WAS TOO STEEP. No really. Got to this point, which we had to make a serious run at, then couldn't get going again. I hate my freakin manual transmission. :rant:

On a good note this might actually be helpful: for the stockers without lockers ride - is it as steep as this? If so I'm out. Also, this trail would've been too much for Subacool's Outback in numerous places, doesn't have the clearance. He might be able to do it, but his wife Lisa would kill him (it's her car). So, can I do stockers without lockers?

Pics never do justice, hard to say. To me that looks almost flat, but I figure it's worse than I-70 right?

It was pretty steep, and long. If I can get a running start I can make it up short stuff. But this just kept going and going and going... Talk about a clutch fryer. I can't afford a new clutch, nor do I think it's worth it, so we turned around.

I'm hoping someone who's been on Mt. Antero can give me an idea about the newbie run (stockers without lockers).

Anyways, we wanted to try a new spot, so off we go to Mt. Antero. Was pretty sure by the advice given here and Wells' book that we'd be fine. I was wrong. Grumble.

I think I'm still upset...

Ok, moving on. It was a beautiful area! We got lots of looks. There were a few folks hanging out at the stream crossing soaking their feet on our way back down. They did triple takes. "No, that is a Subaru!" They raised their beers in a toast to "my ballsiness" as they put it. That helped ease my frustration a bit.

Well, we still didn't have enough fun. Yeah, it was 5pm. Yeah it's a 2.5-3 hour drive home. But hey, the sun's out til 8pm! Plenty of time. So off we go to fourmile, an area closeby that we both know fairly well and isn't difficult. Karla decides to give a new idea of hers a try. Site of my first trail damage in quite a while! This road ended up being a dead end. Whoops. So I had to back out, proved to be a bit tricky with the larger rocks and dips around. There goes the mudflap... Because it about took my bumper with it I'm considering taking them off entirely.

How techy is that hike?

It's not. There is a lot of hopping from rock to rock, but no climbing. You actually have to climb Shavano, then come down the back side. Then you have to go up and over Shavano again. The entire summit of both peaks are covered in rocks/boulders. Its 11.25 miles and took us 11 hours.

A lot of the trail is covered in rocks and that got old quick. I wouldn't do it twice.

Smash couple years ago my parents tried tincup in their '00 outback, and while it didn't get as steep it was just rocky enough that they couldn't go slow enough without a low range and/or burning up the clutch. I really dont understand why subaru doesn't offer a low range anymore. We had two '85 wagons with that low range and unless you high-centered them (ahem maybe like in snow hehe) they were just unstoppable. I really wish they'd go back to that. oh and also get rid of so much of that low hanging plastic. anyways great write up i've been wanting to do antero for a while now and i think your pics may have me convinced to do it this tues. :thunb:

oh yeah BTW that was me up in the "crows nest" it was a great vantage point to get vid from the early (read easy) first part of black bear pass.

I considered trying to get one imported/try to retrofit one from the 80's/put an auto trans into my car, but it's just not worth it.

once again we get screwed here in the US with the choice of vehicles offered. I swear i'm temped to move to AUS just to get a sweet hilux, or defender. and then go play around in the outback for a couple months.

Thanks buddy! Was just frustrating as it's a constant thing I have to fight with that makes the easiest of trails impassible if they are steep. Calmed down now. lol.
