I hope the mud pit on Georgia is dry. Please be aware that some people might need a strap up this little section.

Andrew
August 17th, 2009, 08:57 AM
I should make it. I am not stock for sure but no locker. Have been wanting to do Red Cone for a long time now! My thumb is feeling better and in two weeks should be good to go. Anyone planning to stop for dinner somewhere on the way home?

You have tow hooks right? I know there is a Sub-Frame under there that can take the abuse too. I will say that there sections of Red Cone that might be a bit rough for the lower clearance rigs like your Subbie. I think you'd be good to go on Webster and Georgia Pass though. I didn't do much of Webster the other day, but others should be able to chime in on how they were to either side, as we had people descend in both directions. I might be up for this, but won't know till later this week I think. I'm not stock, and both rigs have some form of locking, but I promise not to turn it on, and I'll likely stay in 2 wheel drive the whole time unless we do Redcone. There are some obstacles on there that beg for both Lockers and ride height:thunb:.

Yep I have tow hooks but I know of people who have ripped them off before, so I don't think they're very strong. Clearance I look good, steepness not so much.

I just have to be patient, I'll have a more capable vehicle soon. Till then I don't want to tear mine apart!

Aaron
August 17th, 2009, 03:17 PM
Webster was pretty easy. There were some spots that I wouldn't want to do in a vehicle wider than mine but there weren't any real places where clearance is a big issue. There was a pretty sizable drop into some mud but I did that for fun. I think you could get around it.

Smash
August 17th, 2009, 03:18 PM
Yeah, again I'm not concerned about clearance. Not worried about clearance. Repeated. Lol. It's the steepness that will kill me.

There is steepness but it is mostly on Red Cone, not Webster. Most of it is on the downhill side but there is some going up.

This is us going up...

You can go down Webster to Montazuma. Take the few mile drive to Tiger Road by Breck and drive up from the Breck side OR We make a loop go back to 285 make a right go to Jefferson and up that way!

Seems that lower gearing would be really helpful on the Red Cone hill, so you don't have to rely solely on mashing your brakes.

Actually, I thought it was scarier that it looked, that it didn't look too bad from a distance. Of course, I drove it four years ago and not in my own rig and that makes a difference with my perspective.

If you hit the Roberts Tunnel outlet you have gone too far. The road is about a half mile before the Tunnel lets its water out into the South Platte (Roberts Tunnel is the water tunnel that diverts water over the divide from Lake Dillon.

This might be a dumb question.

I have to work at 5... what are the chances we'll be off the trail/s around 3?

With a bunch of rigs? I wouldn't bet on it but it isn't impossible. Anytime you need to be off the trail, something seems to impede your progress.

redcone it self isnt very long. if you just run that you should be fine . but also factir in all the trucks it gives you about 4 hrs. i thnk you will be ok. but pathrat is probly right.

If I can make a suggestion here:

I just took a look at the number of rigs going on this trip (29) and in the interest of keeping things a little organized and to allow faster moving groups to pass, it might be a good idea to break the group down into 2 or maybe 3 subgroups.

There aren't all that many spots on the trail to pull over, especially for that number of rigs and by breaking the group down and allowing some space between the sub groups, would allow for faster parties to pass and keep traffic jams down to a minimum.

I just read a post of Colo4x4 where a big group was holding up about 3 smaller groups and was being very rude about letting the smaller, faster moving groups by. It didn't please anyone in the smaller groups.

I have mentioned this before for doing harder trails as everyone bunches up at the obstacles. Whereas Red Cone or any of the other proposed trails on this run don't have really 'hard' obstacles, there is still a tendency to bunch up and stop. Doing this on this run, especially with both the starting time and the number of rigs going would not be a bad idea. Simply stagger the people with CBs so that you can stay in touch, agree on a place to stop for lunch (there are a couple of good scenic spots after the switchbacks that will accamodate many rigs) and keep a watch in your rear view mirrors. Make sure that the person in the rear of each group has a CB and can communicate with the person in the front, letting them know that there is a smaller faster group that is trying to get by.

Just some suggestions. Everybody have fun tomorrow!

Pete, it's 12 rigs and 17 riders so size shouldn't be an issue of too much concern though it is a large group which we need to always keep in mind when we're aware of other wheelers. Two groups would make sense.

Just to clear things up a bit, is the plan for everyone to run Red Cone, or are some people only doing Webster Pass? That right there would slim the group down a bit if it was the case. Looking through the list, it doesn't look like there is anyone going who couldn't make it up Red Cone, but I'm not totally sure.

Also, everyone should make sure and update their RSVP status. I've noticed a few who are definitely going who are still a maybe and such. Its just nice to have an accurate representation of who is going, so we can know who to expect. For me, as long as its within reason, I would wait for one a "yes" person to show up for a little while, and probably wouldn't for a "maybe". Anyways, it should be a lot of fun, and looks like there are a bunch of people I haven't met before, or some that I only met very briefly on the Anniversary Run.

Agreed. Perhaps stopping in on your way by right before congregating? For me, I know I only used a 1/4 tank of gas or less on the Red Cone/Webster/Radical Hill trip a couple weeks ago, so I can generally get by on filling up the night before the trip.
