Mod #1:
So I installed my roof rack a while ago this summer and figured I'd post up-

Crafted the feet that sit on the topper from Bondo and painted them black.
Drilled two holes each through the topper and the mounting foot.
Got some 1/8 steel for backing so that I don't rip the bolts through the fiberglass.
A little drilling in my safari rack and it was mounted.

Lifting a 35x12.5 tire to that rack takes a little muscle..
Got an old hi-lift jack from an uncle and mounted that up there too.

Mod #2
Simple, yet useful- I put a yellow piece of electrical tape at the height of my vehicle on my CB antenna. This truck is sitting about 8'4" now and it's nice to know what I can't go under before I try.

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss181/ShutUpHippie27/P8210011.jpg

The only other mods I have done recently is put in a new air filter, PCV Valve, alternator and spark plugs, which has made the truck better than ever!

That's all for now,
- Rob -

Looks good Rob, did you cut off the excess on those bolts so they do not become head damaging pieces when you were done?

Nah, it's off right now.. but the tire is just in the back now. It's nice having all that extra room without a 35" tire in the truck.

Next on the list. Somehow I just haven't gotten around to it.

Yeah its always the little things that take a while to get to. I know, I have a long list of them.

I had that same rack, but sold it to my buddy Brett and he mounted it on his Blazer's top too but we just drilled holes and put some rubber washers between it and the top. Plus fender washers and nylocks on the bottom. I'll have to see if I have a pic of it!

You should try putting a 38.5x14.50x15 on a 15x9 8 lug beadlock up their. I almost passed out the first time.

You should, he works for the same company you do. So does the guy in the passenger seat but I don't remember his name.

And those weigh more than my 38x15.50x15 on steels. I thought that I was going to leave something critical on the ground the first time I had to get my spare up on the mount. Damn thing weighs as much as I do.

Its stupid but because of the weight and the size i usually didnt carry it with me on trail runs. i could keep it standing up in the back, it was to big to sit flat and shut the tail gate, and it just took up to much room. I would bring it to the run just leave it in the back of the truck incase i needed it. I am not a fan of running them in the roof, even though i still do it from time to time.

I am not a fan of running them in the roof, even though i still do it from time to time.

Since I lowered both my tire mount and the rear winch, I have noticed an real improvement in the COG of the truck. Chris mentioned the same thing after his next to last Moab trip when he had the spare mounted on the roof. He now has it mounted inside the rig.

When I had my 91 XJ, the spare was on the roof briefly. Same thing there. My spare has been relocated about 7 times now and it gets mounted lower each time. If I didn't feel like the first time I didn't have it with me on a trail would be the time I trashed a sidewall, I wouldn't carry mine much at all. I am just a firm believer in Murphy...

I seriously am done carrying a spare unless we are traveling a long distance from the truck. In the XJ not as big of a deal its only a 33, but the 37 for the burb and the next k5 is going to have 40's. they just take up to much room.

Just got finished with cutting up my fenders! Pics and explanation to come..

ShutUpHippie
September 30th, 2009, 09:49 PM
Not a bad idea..

Well anyway, like I said, I have trimmed my fenders a little to allow (hopefully it was enough) for my 35s.

Trying to avoid things like this:
http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss181/ShutUpHippie27/P9300004.jpg

So I took the ol' can opener to it.. took forever, but got it done

Looks almost like it should be that way. Only took 1 beer, 2 sawzall blades, 1 hacksaw, a little bondo, and we can't forget blood.

Only a little cut, but it just wouldn't be right to work on the truck without bleeding.

I am all ready for Wheeler this weekend, I hope I don't rub anymore. :wrench:

You know how it goes though Chris, I've seen your graduation to 35s...

4-wheeling causes bigger tires and more cutting. Give me a few years and there will be something serious occurring. I'd bet on it. :thunb:

I'm still a new guy :D

I have to agree with Chris, I was thinking the whole fender, what lift are you running? Im running 35's and they dont rub w/ no trimming, Ive got a 4 inch. I Have trimmed the front side of the front fender to stop nailing it on rocks, next I will trim the rear...:D

Wow...and here I was expecting to see some fender trimming...That's is only just enough to say that your rig is no longer a sazall virgin...Looks good, though and you really can't tell.

I cheesed out on mine by getting the glass fenders front and rear. The last couple of rigs I had had some major fender trimming done to clear 38s or 39s...I just kept cutting some off each time I increased the tire size...

Well it's supposed to be 4", but who really knows (I bought it that way). I only rubbed about a inch or two back on the back side of the fender. I know it wasn't much trimming, but it should be about all I need.

How wide are your tires though Sunk? Mine are 12.5.. I assume yours are too.

It only rubs under FULL stuff- like when there are offset whoopdeedoos or something that makes my rig articulated to its fullest. I first had the problem running Crystal and Moody and it stopped me when my tire was stuffed all the way.

The burbs got 4" and with 35's it only rubbed a little on the backside inside of the front fender. So i hacked off like and inch of the point. Now no more rubbing. Wait till you try and size on 38's. then talk about trimming.

haha, sounds good to me. I bet you can get them to rub on that back side of the front fender just a bit.

Passengers on the tailgate + bump! = window not working.

So today, after several months of shaking the window violently to get it to open or close, I fixed my window. Turns out the track threw the window out of it... relatively simple procedure, just hard to get at and to see. Nothing really to say or show.. just happy that my rear window goes up and down unassisted and thought I'd share.

,

Today I got into the back seat and finally cut off the 4 bolts hanging down from my roof rack install. I covered them with a piece of wood that has the same shape as a dome light (which I thought was the same color of paint as the shell, but turned out it wasnt) then caulked around the outside. Looks okay, still needs a little work, but it keeps metal out of skulls. :thunb:

Also got a new seat belt for the drivers side in the back.

The K5 is safe for passengers on the snow run tomorrow. I feel better that I finally got something done on this thing.

And as you can see, I still haven't done the 4 in the back. They do serve well as before and after photos I guess..
