How about a thread for questionable installs you have seen? I stumbled across a racing harness install step-by-step that I found rather unsafe (although josh dissagreed a little), but it got me thinking... we have all seen it. The 2 foot long leaf spring shackles... the 1 foot tall axle blocks... any horror stories??

note : original post changed because frankly i didnt want to see an all out brawl about safety issues... some people saw the post with this link which i found to be rather unsafe... especially caiming to be "the right way"
http://www.hondaclub.com/forum/articles/4952-how-install-racing-harness-right-way.html (http://www.hondaclub.com/forum/articles/4952-how-install-racing-harness-right-way.html)

The other thing to think of with seat belts is the shoulder harness heights due to the risk of a spinal compression. If the mounting point is too far below your shoulder level, the force of an impact as you move forward against the seatbelt will actually push down on your spine, causing a crushed or ruptured disc, etc.

Good article: http://www.gforce.com/pdf/Harness_Install_Info.pdf

The guy in the pass seat is the same guy that will lift the hood when it dies and stand there and stare for a minute or two and then poke his head around the hood and say "try it now"

I like that one Randy! How many people do you think were involved with that recovery or were standing around? 8-10, maybe?

Sad, sad, sad...that with that many people there, including trained rescue people...I did see someone in a firefighter's uniform..that there wasn't enough brain power on tap to be able to avoid something like that....

When we...or should I say LaDawn....flopped the rig, I took it out of gear and turned the key off. When I turned the key off, I put it back in gear. Why? Because we were pointing downhill and I didn't want it to roll when it went back to rubber side down...

I didn't take any pictures, but I have seen the LIFT BLOCKS that everyone says to avoid.

How did I know these were the ones to avoid? Because half of one block was GONE. The cheap cast had fractured and pulverized. The missing half was visable only if you were under the truck. At least this one made it to the junkyard!

No kidding! I would hate to see what is under the front end if this is what clownboy had under the back!

This link is well worth looking at as it shows a huge amount of just what not to do in the world of fabrication: (http://128.83.80.193/scarysteering/index.html)

http://128.83.80.193/scarysteering/index.html

Just because you have a welder and can weld is no excuse for doing something unsafe. It is also no excuse for not doing some basic research and doing the 'reinventing the wheel' engineering. If you have an older vehicle that you use for wheeling, meaning a rig that has been around for years, many experienced people have worked out all the bugs in whatever you are planning on doing to it. Chances are that these people have way more knowledge and expertise than you do. Make use of this knowledge...there is no excuse not to.

It is obvious from most of the pictures on this post that almost all of these people who did these mods did no research and did the fab with no thought to either safety or anything else. This is the kind of dumbass fabrication that starts the legislation to get 'modified' vehicles off the street....and you can see why..

All right. I have to stick up for Red Green (played by Steve Smith) of the New Red Green Show out of Toronto, Canada, and still airing on PBS on Saturday nights. This is from a segment of the show called "Handyman Corner," where Red (a notoriously cheap fella) makes his own stuff with duct tape and other things lying around the Possum Lodge. My all-time favorite is when he made a drag racer out of a bus. He ends the segment with the tagline, "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

Words to live by.

Yeah...way too much "The Fast and The Furious", "Gone in 60 Seconds", etc.

Some of those little rice burners are really hot, though, pushing over 800hp and weighing next to nothing.

Too bad that they are in the minority and the wannabes do the 3rd world customizing with plywood and chipboard. Not to mention the lawnmower exhaust...I get a laugh when I hear this bad loud noise on the road and some kid drives by me looking "bad", his little engine floored, and his car slowly pulling away ....all at around 30-35mph

BTW, I saw an almost identical plywood wing set up about a week ago somewhere in Arvada...It was nice. It was bad. I want one for my heap...

Some of the ricers are pretty cool and damned fast. It took me a while to understand why they got popular with kids until it dawned on me that they didn't have much else to pick from. I was behind a couple guys at a stoplight on Hampden once. A nicely built Civic and a built '66 Mustang. The Mustang owner showed the kids what 8 cylinders can do when the light changed.

cardboard...LOL I did an experiment on a '71 Duster in the early '80s. I was living in the midwest and drove home for a ski vacation. I had the ski rack on top of the car, so I decided to experiment a little with some corrugated:

First, I had the ski tips up, toward the back of the car, holding the cardboard up to make a little spoiler. I didn't notice any difference, so I flipped the skis over and situated the cardboard to channel air down the back window and behind the car.

Filling the vacuum behind the car seemed to ease the burden on the engine, the car seemed to roll easier, I think I even gained a little fuel mileage. I stopped experimenting after the fuel efficiency seemed to improve.

I was all about not spending extra money. I even went so far as to swap in a manual steering gear because I might pick up an estimated 1-2 MPG. That experiment is another story, and I'd be telling on myself...in this thread of all places! :D

That actually reminds me of a more yuppy "questionable install". Does anyone else role their eyes in disgust when they see a Toyota Prius that constantly drives around with a rocket box or bike rack on their car? I know for me in my Subaru, anything on top lowers my gas mileage significantly (like 15-20 instead of 25-30mpg), and one of the Prius's claims to fame other then the hybrid thing, is that its ultra aerodynamic (hence the ugly evidently). Throwing a rocket box or driving around with your bike on the roof everywhere you go completely ruins the reason for having the car if you ask me. Trust me, I know it does.....

There is $20-30K worth of absolute bull**** fabrication work on that otherwise very nice truck. It is like someone said "Let's spend all this $$ and turn this nice truck into an absolutely worthless POS"

The car isn't much better. Just needs 'Chihuahua" or "Gonzales" in the back window and a nice set of dingo balls to top it off. Some basic anti-American bumper stickers would be the topper as would a nice gold metal flake paint job...the kind with flakes the size of your thumb nail...

What I am really curious about is the 'one link' suspension set up. I have heard of this sporadically, but never actually seen one. It would have to be immensely strong. Those axles weight about 1,000 pounds each.

Most guys making this kind of setup use trailer hitch balls, or some variant of them. Others use massive heim joints, like these...

http://evolutionmachine.com/uploads/monthly_03_2008/post-1-1205689531.jpg

Here is the best thing to use if you ask me. Its essentially a machined billet trailer hitch ball captured in a machined housing.

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/7128/dsc7463a640logokm7.jpg

You weld a plate to a really burly crossmember, and this bolts onto that like such....

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/7631/360028bt2.jpg

You still have to use a panhard bar to control the side to side movement of the axle, but the main thing holding it to the vehicle is that one attachment point. One more pic...

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/7599/360009gs0.jpg

Definitely makes for a quick and dirty way to get an axle to do some serious articulation. Here is one more and more "homegrown" setup that people use, mostly for mud trucks that might see some "off road park" use....

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=113322&stc=1&d=1078185241

The neat thing about a 1 link is, not only do you get lots of articulation easily with it, but the link itself protects the drive lines and third member. Certainly not the answer for most rigs, but if you want to get it done quick and dirty, and are willing to put some heavy duty (emphasis on heavy) crossmembers and fab work in, then it works pretty well. Certainly wouldn't want to drive it every day, and its almost a trailer mandatory endeavor. Most of the ones I have seen were on mud trucks, in the south and east coast where there are only "off road parks" to play in (not much for public lands there) and stuff like that. Pretty neat stuff, but not great in every situation.

hmm.... i might do this to brutus, it will definitely protect the driveshafts!

Haku

Could be cool, but you'd have to make everything super duper beefy with your rig. The rigs I posted are pretty heavy, but most of it is due to the rockwell axles and such, and is unsprung weight. With your rig, it will be heavy both sprung and unsprung. You'll just have to make super beefy crossmembers and panhard and all that stuff. Definitely doable with your rig, especially if you use some heavy duty coilovers and such too.

Sorry (not) if this belongs to anyone here or a friend of yours...if you or your friend don't know that you have bad taste by now, it's about time someone told you:D

This reminded me of the guy we built the $8 mil+ log home for in Jefferson. Looks like something he would buy. Mr Wannabe Cowboy/Colorado with $8k elk antler chandeliers, wannabe trophies that he shot at a 'trophy farm'...right up his alley...

Best watch that James...we have a few folks from Texas here that are pretty sensitive...and much bigger than you:D Good thing that they are good natured (they are bigger than me, too) because that was the first thing I looked for, too!

haha that thing lives over off of 72 and Sheridan. I see that damn thing all time. And always wondered what inspired them to do that. Only superbirds and daytonas can pull something like that off.

I saw it last year, kinda cool to see it still cruising around.

Having a hobby like junkyarding lets me see all kinds of questionable work. Sometimes I wonder, "What were they thinking???" Scarier yet is when I understand!

Backwards slapper bar anyone? I get the idea on this one.

The backward traction bar is for the underground 'reverse races'. Surely you have heard of them, Mike....

Well, what do you say to that? After all, you are a bit of a questionable install yourself, everyone knows that your taste (except for Jessica and one or two of your rigs) is pretty deplorable, so if you were to turn up with a big set of horns on one of your rigs, nobody would raise an eyebrow or say anything about it...:D:D:D
