Wondering what others record in MPG from their 4x4s. Filled up my 87 Toyota truck last night and broke out the calculator. After the adjustment for the larger tires, it gets 23.5 MPG. That is mixed city/highway, just running around town errands. It has the 22r (2.4L carb'd) with 5 speed.

I get around 15 mpg on my 04' TJ 4.0L so your doing way better than me for sure. Also mixed between city/highway. Sucks I think I should be getting better mpg's but who knows.

I guess the one thing to say is that I did a really good tuneup (not of my own choice) and I also keep off the skinny pedal.

Straight highway is about 22-23 mpg. Mixed, I get about 16.8 on a weekly tank. Over the Rockies loaded down up hill in the wind? 11-12. In four-lo, suck mileage.

:D I like this part

I get 27mpg mixed driving, full-time AWD. The three times I've towed my 67 Baja down to CORE I got 23mpg. Technically, it is a 4x4 :D

My wife's Forester gets 28mpg in town. I have been rather surprised!

Daaaaaaaaaaaang!!!!! 500 a tank! I thinks me needs a bigger tank  I only get a little over 200 miles before I have to filler back up again.

I get around 16-17 in the Rubi.
Ashley's AWD FX35 gets slightly better. Around 20 or so.
Both mixed driving.

I think my dad gets 22mpg in town on his automatic diesel. He doesn't drive highway empty. With the 24' Airstream he gets 14 on the highway, which is pretty impressive.

damn i'm only getting 17 with my 4runner.

Mine always got 22 in town as a minimum. I would get about the same on the highway. I don't have any power goodies and try to keep a light foot on it. I also run smaller tires at 32".

When i had my 30x9.5 I would get about 360 miles per tank..now
I get 300 to 320 miles to a tank on 32x11.5...not bad with 355 gears...

how many miles to a tank do you usually get? i'm hoping to bump up my mpg's significantly regearing and putting a fresher motor in.

Doing mixed driving with the 33s and not recalculating for them and running super I averaged 18.54mpgs this last tank. One of the bests for the ranger.

16-18 for me, with better mileage off road as I am basically idling in low range.

Crazy how this works my ranger does the same thing @ least 5-7 miles better or if I am hauling a heavy load it goes up pretty good too.

My sammy gets high 19's in the winter and low 20.x in the summer (gas changes in winter)

Off road about the same.

The xj gets about 17 always
the burb gets 16 on the highway, 14 in town, 10-14 towing/wheeling
the f350 dually gets ?? on the highway empty(never ran a tank on the highway without towing) in town about 14, towing about 13. The worst tank i have ever gotten out of it was 12.5 and that was hauling a class C rv on the trailer i had alot of drag. I think it should get about 18 empty on the highway but not really sure.

18 mpg - 87 Sami, 1.3, 3.72s, 32x9.50s, 5sp manual, 6.5 xfer case - Highway, well, lets just say it's best for me to stay off the highway. My mileage is all around. Never ran a tank through it on the highway.

10.6 mpg - 84 F-250 4wd, 460, 4.10s 4sp manual, w/camper, - drops just a little loaded and towing but not much. Worst ever was 7 loaded and runnin 75-80.

a v8 plus a heavy right foot means ~ 14-15mpg in the disco

the allroad gets ~17 in a mix of city and hwy driving, but I figure thats not bad for a car with 395hp at the wheels. I guess my mods have brought down my mileage a little bit. I used to get ~19 before I started messing with the motor.

I just got 14 on the cleanup run, I'd like to see what I get with a tank on the paved roads but never make it through a tank before hitting a trail.

I just refueled the dually after towing the jeep out to chinamans and averaged out 14.5. I think thats really good since we were running late and it was alot of 75-85 mph through the mountains.

I haven't checked in a while, but I think the FJ Cruiser (6-speed manual, full-time 4-wheel-drive) gets about 13 around town, which is most of my driving. When I get on the highway, it's to head to a trail, so no clue on highway mileage, but it's probably around 16. I've added some weight with skids, winch bumper and winch. Tires are about 33-inch BFGs.

Haven't checked the FJ40 yet. It's still on the first tank of gas.

Anywhere from 9-13mpg: not really sure cause the speedo and everything's all off from the larger than stock tires, but I imagine I'm close in my estimation.

It sounds like it gets 6, haha... god bless America

First tank with you driving it? Or first tank ever....because that would take some diligence not to drive a 40 for 20+ years

September 16th, 2009, 09:26 AM
I dont even want to know what my scout gets. I would say 8 would be a pretty good estimate like rolands. My speedo is so far off tho that I will never know. All I know is if I leave denver full, I pretty much have to fill before hitting a trail most likely, but I could go forever on a trail. Really uses nothing in the way of gas. Its the highways that kill me. turning 35's with 3.54 gears on a 34 year old V8.

My M1009 (K5 Diesel military) gets about 20-22mpg when cruising under 60mph. Any faster and the mpg really goes to crap. If I put in a 700R4 tranny & turbo I would get even better numbers.

I am considering putting a 6.2 diesel in an S10. I heard of people getting 30mpg in these rigs..

Diesel has more energy per gallon than gasoline...

That would be a fun conversion, what suspension would you have to run?

I would certainly be putting a solid front axle/leafs under the S10. I have a D44 sitting out here just for that purpose. The bellhousing is a direct bolt up but the motor mounts and radiator need moved. This would be the ultimate in MPG for a low-buck build.
