For as much as schools talk about promoting a heathy generation this seems to be a step in the oppisite direction

I am glad to see there are groups standing up for this. I understand the busy road aspect, but come on... How fat/lazy to want kids to be?

that is just insane. the article didnt make much a point of it but mentioned that at that school walking to school is banned too. wow. eventually the government will simply mandate that you spend every day just sitting in a chair.

I'd tell them that my taxes pay to run the school, therefore walking and riding is fine with me. It's not being done on their property, nothing they can do about it.

Trust me, I am worried about the stupidity that seems to be running rampant.

Yup, I feel that way about many of these new "laws" and "rules" that are being thought of.

Oh no, apparently you haven't heard:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/09/27/obama-proposes-longer-school-day-shorter-summer-vacation/

Gee wonder where the money is going to come from to support this little gem!!!

Extra time is not cheap. The Massachusetts program costs an extra $1,300 per student, or 12 percent to 15 percent more than regular per-student spending, said Jennifer Davis, a founder of the program. It received more than $17.5 million from the state Legislature last year.

50 x $17.5 million a YEAR!!!!!:confused::mad:

this phrase pisses me off....

"But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom."

i beg to differ, i feel better teachers and better incentives for teachers to put up with little sh!theads crap, better curriculum, facilities, teachers. And less goshdamn homework unless you need it cause your failing! Take the time in class to teach not waste the classtime telling what kids need to do at home, thats why we go to school to learn AT SCHOOL not at home.....

challenge kids more, spend more money for classroom stuff, books, tools, supplies.

longer days wont fix bad teachers, bad teaching habits, bad curriculum, bad kids, special kids. It will just exacerbate the issue and waste more money! STUPID PRESIDENT TUCKFARD:mad: why is it that everytime government wants to fix something they throw massive amounts of money at stuff that does nothing to fix the problem?

Safe place to go? WHY NOT GO TO YOUR HOME!!!!!

"The president, who has a sixth-grader and a third-grader, wants schools to add time to classes, to stay open late and to let kids in on weekends so they have a safe place to go."

Teachers shouldn't have to put up with the kids crap. The parents need to beat them into submission.

A friend who's a social worker has told me that as long as you say "Oops" it's OK :D

Seriously parents need to step up to let schools teach the 3 R's. As it is the schools are forced to teach the basics that parents are failing to do. I've known a lot of teachers, spent a lot of time in schools as a parent, volunteer, computer tech and computer teacher and I can confirm parents are doing a lousy job and forcing schools to pick up the slack.

When kids don't know the basics of respect, responsibility, and work the teachers can't teach. This applies to all socio-economic groups. I know principals that have stories that would appall even the most seasoned of us.

It's long past the time for parents to step up and do their job.

What are your 3 R's?

Parents are doing horrible jobs these days, I agree. It wasn't fun to get my ass whipped as a kid, but damnit it did me good.

As the spouse of a teacher I would think you'd be in favor it. I think it's a great idea myself. The US is falling farther & farther behind other countries every year, a lot of that attributable to Bush's "ejacation" policies.

C'mon Aaron, you're being blatantly baited now.

Just because there is bait doesn't meant the fish is gonna bite. ;) But yes I agree that Bush with his "NO Child Left Behind" crap was a horrible idea. Now you only have to be as good as the worst student...

 Fair enough. While I know we're on opposite sides of the political fence I will say you have tremendous strength in the area of restraint.

Here's a feel good teacher story for you: My daughter had her wrist broken when she was attacked by a student.

Agreed 100%. I wonder how many people saw that and just laughed. All the satire in it and the actual point went right over their little heads...I saw it and thought "damn...a few more advances in technology, a few billion more McDonalds craplets...and there is the world in a couple of years, floating above a planet that we have totally trashed out to the point of making it a ****hole, everyone carrying around an extra couple hundred pounds, and too lazy to do a damn thing about it"

Politicians should be forced down onto a sharpened stakes in the ground in public places....
