That is scary to say the least! Just another one of those things they don't tell us about.

And the media likes to make people think that the swine flu is some new thing that has never been around before and it's the end of the world and everyone is going to die unless you get a vaccine.
My question is what good is a vaccine that you have to take yearly? Seems like I don't take polio vaccines every year, etc.

Just more stuff to scare you into dependence....
Swine Flew - Now
Bird Flew - couple of years ago
West Nile - 3 or 4 years ago
SARS - a bit before that
Global Warming - The last 2 decades (dont get me started)
Upcoming ice age - about 3 decades ago.
It takes pandemics and death and carnage to get ratings, sell new stories, and keep people scared enough to ask the government to spend more money. So, even if there isn't anything to be afraid of, its in the best interest of a few to make sure we stay scared.
I ain't skeert!

I get the flu with or without the shots, so what's the point? Just a gov scam to track us all :D

I get the shots and have had the flu once since they started offering them. They also seem to help prevent simpler, related viruses such as colds.
I remember the deaths with the '76 swine flu vaccinations. I'm sure that's why they're trying to get it called H1N1 so people don't make the connection.

Wow, somebody else who remembers the '70s!!!
Can you think of one person back then who had the Swine Flu??? I can't.
My :princess: had the Hong Kong flu back then. From her description it was serious stuff.
I get the shot every year. I get sick less often. When I do get sick it's less severe and I recover faster.

the last time i was severely ill from flu or something was back in 1995. i did get bacterial pneumonia from scuba diving in 2002 but that doesnt count. I barely get the cold these days...

My whole family had the Hong Kong flu, that was terrible nasty. Of all the things I remember from the 70's that's one I'd rather forget.
Yeah, there's a bunch I wish I could remember too.

My question is what good is a vaccine that you have to take yearly? Seems like I don't take polio vaccines every year, etc.
The virus that causes polio doesn't mutate. Hence, only one shot is required. The flu antigen mutates every year, which is why the name changes all the time (Hong Kong flu, swine flu, etc.). So a new vaccine or vaccines have to be developed every year.
And the flu, depending on the strain, can truly cause a pandemic. The 1918 flu killed from 50 million to 100 million people (record weren't as good back then) and infected probably 500 million people.
That said, I can understand why some people are against inoculations. Any inoculation can and will kill or cause other health problems in some people. But isn't it good that we've eradicated polio in the U.S.? (I think it exists now in only four countries.) And diphtheria?
Heck, more people die each year from misprescribed medications than from inoculations.
I do agree, though, that the media, particularly TV news, too often blows things out of all proportion. Some of us remember the swine flu scare of the '70s. That TV station's story didn't give much context. For one thing, we're talking about the mid-1970s. Medical knowledge and immunization technology has advanced much since then. And I think the government, the CDC and the World Health Organization learned a lot from the swine flu scare of more than 30 years ago. From what I've read and heard from more responsible news outlets, everyone's trying to prepare people for the possibility of a pandemic without scaring the crap out of them.
No, I didn't get the swine flu shot back then, probably because I was young and immortal. But I get a flu shot every year now.

I agree Rob, it concerns me when I hear people go totally against inoculations especially with kids. These diseases can come back.

Well, DrUnit pretty much covered everything on my mind.
He is right. Why is there an annual flu shot? Because the virus mutates as a means of genetic selection. Why get shots? To hopefully eradicate lethal or debilitating diseases and so you don't infect me.

Agreed, it's all about the government being our savior. Too bad people aren't smart enough to realize that the standard flue kills tens of thousands of people a year, and alcohol related deaths are through the roof, as are obesity related deaths.....people don't want to fix those though, they're actually personal issues related to their lifestyle choices....Pass the blame on I suppose :-P

And if that happened, you could expect a really nasty pink-bumper rash. Or is it gonna be sunshine yellow? (Sorry, I'm cross-contaminating threads now.)

I like that you mention many deaths occur each year because of regular, seasonal, run of the mill influenza.
And yes, people should get their act together and as Obi-Wan said in the second new Star Wars movie, "go home and re-think your life". Some people seem to want the government to save them from getting fat at Mickey Dee's, and they seem to be the same people who think the government is too involved.

Yup people are very confused, and don't think for themselves, in general. they want the solution in a pill, instead of just dealing with it. The sad thing about vaccines and antibiotics is that all we're doing is killing the weak strains of the infections. Which results in no such thing as the "common" cold. Anything we catch now days is borderline serious. the antibiotics also make it hard to develope a strong immune system, which makes the serious infections harder to fight

Agreed. This is the first season I have had antibacterial hand soap in the house, and have the sanitizer gel out. The reason for these was so my sick kids didn't spread their germs. The reason for me not usually having these products in the house (in the truck for outdoors, ok) is so I don't build my own Petri dish of antibacterial product resistant germs. A little bit of exposure is a good thing. You don't want your body over-reacting to what should be minor bugs; you want to save the immune response for the real threats.

I hope I'm mutating. That would explain a lot of things.
And I think I'm way past the point where a selection advantage would do me any good. Though an enhancement or three wouldn't hurt. :thunb:

Agreed, as long as you're intelligent about it and don't expose yourself to extremely harmful things. A little dirt or bacteria isn't going to hurt anyone. Your common influenza virus isn't hanging out on your o****er top

I agree about the minor bugs but found the antibacterial hand wash pretty effective. I worked in elementary school computer labs which are filthy, filthy places as are elementary schools in general. I never got sick during that time but did use the antibacterial generously.

They do do wonders, but they don't kill everything and what they don't kill, is the best of the best, which only leaves serious bacteria left on the surfaces that can't be killed by the antibacterial soap. I think it's more of a personal preference than anything, but in the long run it seems like it's only going to lead us to trouble

Too bad people aren't smart enough to realize that the standard flue kills tens of thousands of people a year
For this reason I get a flu shot every year through my wife's employer, she works for an OBGYN and they don't mess around with it. I just got it last night in fact, next week I get the other. The doctors give it to the employees and their family for free. Last week they had a mother who was 8 months die from H1N1 the baby lived.

At my work, they give us the anti-bacterial soap and there are hand gel dispensers at just about all the major door openings. They also give us the Clorox wipes to wipe our desks down. I have carried the gel around with me at work for several years, I can't tell you how many times I have been in the bathroom and hear someone wiping in one of the stalls, who would come out and walk right past the sink and not wash their hands!!! They touch all the doors I do, nasty b@stards!!!!

I get a kick out of the news and medical alerts telling people to wash their hands frequently. My guess is more people are but those same people are spreading their germs on door handles increasing the exposure to everyone else.
I don't worry about this kind of stuff myself but both my wife & daughter pull their sleeve over their hand before touching door handles. They've done this for as long as I can recall, not just recently due to swine flu concerns.

I don't think I'll ever get a flu shot. Not even sure I would for kids if I had any.
I don't really take any medicine at all, ever. It's gotta be pretty bad for me to take anything. I don't really go to the doctors very often as I don't really get sick much. If I do get sick, I'm better in 24 hours. I've been sick twice in the last 5 years.
I also don't buy into the ridiculous handwashing that some parents do. Wash wash wash wash wash and all they do is hurt development of a good immune system I think.
People are overmedicated these days. That is another problem - people take medicine they shouldn't, docs prescribe stuff they shouldn't - and it allows the bugs to get more immunte to the medicines.

You're defying the American belief that there's a pill for whatever ails you Andrew! Our culture expects instant cure via a pill and then we act with dismay when people self medicate.

I grew up on a farm in Missouri. I never gave hygiene a second thought. I can also say I never got sick. Even to this day, I don't give hygiene a second thought. So, in respect of others, I wash my hands when I go to the bathrooms, etc. I don't want my friends to get sick and die from my germs.

Yes, you guys make a good point of using the sanitizer stuff in public to keep the germy filth other people are spreading away from your own hands. At work, there is constant washing and alcohol foaming. At home, I don't need it.
That is awful about the pregnant women that are getting hit hard by the new flu.
