View Full Version : November 1st Snow Run!

Well home safely, had a blast!!

I am not 100% sure which trails we ended up running all day long, so I'll leave that for someone else. Chains were a big BIG plus on this run, as I would have been stuck on the big hills. Randy got stuck for at least an hour on the first big hill, and it took 3 Jeeps hooked together to get him up. (His outrageous winch helped a little too) We rode 5 people, 1 dog for about half the trail when Randy decided he didn't want to have an alternator melt-down... needless to say Hostess Snack Cakes were present :thunb:

Overall, a great day. It's always good to see new faces and to recognize some from before.

I didn't take a single picture  but I look forward to the pics and videos that everyone else took.

Matt and I had a good time, too! I only took a couple of pictures, but I think Matt took a bunch. We started on the middle entrance to Bunce School once we got through the drift blocking Middle St Vrain only to find the gate closed. We then took the Ironclads trail and that was when the fun really started. Almost everyone took a tow or had to winch at some point, but that was a pretty typical snow run.

There was nowhere near the 30+ inches of snow we were expecting either. It looked everyone who wanted to run MSV and Coney the day before ended up on Bunce and Ironclads as the trail was tracked up. This ended up being both good and bad as the tracks, especially anything going uphill, were especially slick requiring a healthy shot of momentum to get up. Once that was lost, it was winch time...

We dropped the Brat after the first turn onto Ironclads, but everyone was impressed at how well it was doing. Randy dropped his truck off after backing down from the second icy hill on Ironclads, which was probably a really good decision.

Chains certainly ruled the day and Charlie had THE TICKET with all four wheels chained. He had no problems with anything except trying to pull Randy's monster up an icy hill...hence the 3 Jeeps...Anyone who was running chains just in the rear was doing pretty well. Anyone who wasn't was running on low air pressure and speed..

A good day, a good run, fun people and good to put new faces to names and see some people that I haven't seen for awhile!

Kubo took a boatload of pics and videos. He said he'd try to post at least some teasers tonight. I took only a few pics. I'll process them after I finish unloading the rig and getting my winch cable squared away. I needed a cheese and cracker break.

Fun, fun day, except for a couple downhill stretches in ice and snow. I need a bit lower gearing in the rear.

Got to meet a lot of new people today, too. Excellent. Kubo, glad to have you along today. Hope it met your expectations.

Had a great time, as usual.

Charles and I made it out. We didn't make the plane crash since it was getting late we just ran out to the MSV camp area.

Always good to meet fellow wheelers, the tripple header pulling Randy up was a 1st for me.

God oh man am i tired. but got home safe.

I had a BLAST! and yes i need chains and lockers. :) (next on the list)
I also need 7 new batteries to handle winching duty with that winch (on list as well)

I want to thank those that tied up and assisted brutus up the icy climb (you can see what he has to do on his own lol) 3 rigs to pull him up 75 ft of hill.

I did turn around at the one spot where it gets steeper and the obstacle cause i didnt want to burn out the alternator winching for 3 hours. (i think it needs a certain amount of current to get the motor turning or else it wont start, so more batteries will help).

I got 4 vids and i think 40 or 50 pics ill post tomorrow, as i am exhausted (32 hours up).

i dont think i can run the full iron clads in snow as i would have pinballed all the way down the far side. (ask shut up hippie how many trees we almost hit)

Thanks to all and good night!

It was great to meet everyone today, and yes, I did have fun. Rob, thanks again for letting me ride with you! I was also glad that my early mishap didn't put a damper on everything. For those of you that didn't catch that, I've slipped and fell face first on a rock. Luckily (thanks to my ninja-like reflexes) I've caught myself and avoided splitting my head open by a hair (one of mine, literally!).

Here's the really frustrating part - I got up at 9am feeling just fine. So, me thinks at 6am I was still a bit intoxicated. Whoops! My apologies to Randy and Hippie for showing you guys up.

Can't wait to see more photos and video, I'm surprised there wasn't more snow though. From the reports I figured there would be so much you could hardly walk!

Well, you might have gotten sore from pulling winch cable, too, especially Randy's 1/2" stuff! For sure would've been more fun than moving though.

Moving sucks. You do everything yourself, and it is a pain and takes forever, but you don't ding your stuff up. You hire a moving company and it isn't too bad, but your stuff gets dinged up..

Not all movers ding your stuff, but the last ones we used really got ours bad and wouldn't stand behind the repairs.

In Charlies rig, we did not air down. I believe we were running around 30PSI. the chains were the ticket. The only time we got stuck was trying to pull Brutus up the hill, but that was only because we were attached to a boat anchor. We got legitimately stuck one more time, after we split off with Andy. Charlie saw that he was playing around int eh drifts so we tried and got high centered and had to be yanked out. Chains were awesome though.

Everyone with chains, even just on the back, did better than those of us without. Both Robs had chains and Charlie had chains x4. The Robs had theirs in the back. I can't answer the question about airing down with chains for the people that ran them. If I run chains, I usually don't air down at all, or, better yet, air down, put the chains on, and then air back up, which keeps the chains very tight.

The rest of us just aired down. I was aired down to 9 pounds and did fine, mostly running open/open, but locked up the front on the longest hill just so I wouldn't have to stop. And every time I stopped, if it was on any kind of incline, I usually had to back up and get a bit of a run at it. It was slick.

If I had had time to cut and weld up the 2 sets of busted chains to fit my 38s, I would have stuck them on for sure.

I was aired down to about 19- with those chains on, I seemed to unstoppable! It was great, I could even start on hills.

Hello all,,,

Thanks for the great snow wheelin trip!!

I had a great passenger,,Medic,,he was very helpful from getting chains on the tires, fixin them when they broke off when attempting to pull Brutus uphill as well as best help of wrapping the hot dogs in tinfoil to cook on the engine!!!!

Thanks to the other guys that also helped with my chains.

I must admit attempting to pull Brutus uphill was so fun!! My tires dug and dug to over half way down in the mud...Those "chicken feet" chains dug down fast!! With Tru-Trac front and rear with chains -- traction control was not an issue.

Coming down the Iron Clads had Gorgeous views of the front range.

After making it back down to Bunce School -- Ace, Medic and I made a journey to the entrance trail to T-33 plane crash....but we didnt make it there until almost 345ish...with time change and the trail really icing up we decided to continue on bunce school down to Camp Dick area to head back home.
My pics will be uploading soon.

What a great day of snow wheelin!!!

Til WE wheel again,
Cheers to ya!!!

I had the Z design cable chains. I think they were somewhat helpful, but I think I'd prefer the real chains.

Rob......you need to be the guinea pig and get a pair of snobootz for the front and see how they work out. :)

Steep at $340 for just two, but you can use them on the front with IFS. - http://www.snobootz.com/

The RUD-comfort Centrax look cooler, but they don't make them in our sizes - http://www.rud.com/en-us/produkte/schneeketten/pkw/centrax.html

Mud Tires going uphill on snow are great for SNOW / MUD ROOSTER TAILS. :thunb:

Watching Brody with 38's going down Iron Clads was ...he came so close many times to introducing his awesome rig to trees!!

Brutus has awesome Swampers--huge lugs--incredible torque with diesel power,,:thunb: but,,,he could not get traction.

I aired down to about 30lbs with basic snow tracker 235x75 radials with chains. :thunb: Axle mods on both axles. Traction was not an issue.

Large mud tires are inevitably (sp?) huge tires with slick lugs.

BFG TA/KO's are good tires on trail, but dont "release" the snow / mud..so basically your turning "slick" tires.

Mud tires are really good on Mud,,but unless you "sipe" them to open the tread for ice...you are slipping like "bambie on on frozen pond".

most of the off road tires should be able to handle the snow... however the compact ice is the problem..

what were the conditions of the trails? hard ice?
I know all about the BFG AT/KOs and their lack of releasing. Horrible mud tire.

I wheel the full sized diesel, and what was happening was a front tire and rear tire were getting on compacted snow and slipping causing loss of traction. If i had snow chains i would have had minimal issues getting up all that stuff. anything on compacted snow or ice will have problems. but we still made it.

look in this picture and you will see one tire on each axle spinning and one tire on each axle being lazy. this is what happens with open diffs. :(

6speed manual ~365hp,upwards of 800ftlb torque this is off the engine with bumper in about 22ft long, with tiregate out im 25~ft. i get through places others have hit trees in.:thunb:

it does have its limitations though, breakover angle, some switchbacks and many obstacles. its not a rock crawler but it is capable of a great deal! Its mainly an expo vehicle though and recovery vehicle, thus the big a$$ winch up front. soon to have a winch in the rear.

Hey Pete,
What tires are you running and how well did they do in the snow?

38x15.50x15 Nitto Mud Grapplers. They actually do everything quite well for a big, fat, open lugged tires. They are noisy on the road, but I expected that and don't care. They are wearing very well. They actually handle pretty well on icy/snowy pavement. They do surprisingly well in the snow. You just have to air them down a bit. The sidewalls are very thick and stiff and take awhile to break in. You almost can't see the flex unless they are aired down to under 12 psi.

The other tires I really liked, actually made by the same company, were the Toyo MTs. I had these in the 37x14.50x15 and would probably still be running them, but Toyo goes to a 16" rim in the 38s. One of the absolute best all round tires I have ever run.

No and I ran a lot of trails aired down and with lots of rocks with them as I actually had money back then for gas. Ran a lot of highway miles , too. Some minor chunking, but way less than the MTRs I had before them. I wouldn't say it was any kind of problem, at least for me.

Alright. I've run Toyo street tires on cars and they were awesome, expensive though.

Yes they are. I got the Toyos from a friend's brother who had around 5k miles on them and an unused spare for a good price. The Nittos I got a deal on because one of the people we rent to sold them and we gave him a deal on the lease for a deal on the Nittos. I was going to get 39.5 Swamper Radials, but the guy gave me a better deal on the more expensive Nittos...

Who knows what I am going to end up with the next time I need tires. Money seems to dictate the choices, more than anything else.

You can't really make generic statements. Certain conditions create better performance for certain setups.

I am also dual locked, my MT's are exceptional winter tires, and I am geared pretty low. Chains would make things better except if I articulated they would hit the body.

So much depends on your rig and how you have set it up. Once the snow is deep enough that you are dragging both pumpkins through the snow, a dual locked SFA rig that is heavy enough to want to dig may perform at about the level of a front IFS rig that is only rear locked. Why? Because the IFS has much better clearance and there is no benefit to articulation in these conditions.

I've run up what amounts to a 50 yard ice waterfall on a steep section of trail without a tire spin watching other rigs that are poorly geared get halfway up and literally spin and slide all the way back to the bottom.

In this condition, the weight of my rig is a big plus. As the snow gets deeper, it becomes a greater and greater liability, which is why for me the biggest possible tire size with good gearing and lockers is my preferred setup.

Really looks like you had perfect run condition, I'll stop web wheeling now

Spectacular! I couldn't have been more thorough. You're exactly right :thunb:

Sorry it's taking so long, but I haven't really had a chance to sit down and go through all of the 56 video clips (2.5GB - just shy of an hour of footage). So far, I was able to edit 35 clips (1.5GB), which totals to about 33 minutes of unedited video. I've cut that down to three clips of about 3 minutes each -took me about 7 hrs total. I'm using Windows Movie Maker which is a royal pain in the you know what, wife's laptop that needs special attention otherwise it shuts down randomly, and I'm doing all this for free  AWESOME!! Hey, if anybody would like all this footage, just send me a DVD and I can see what I can do (or when).
Btw, the nice thing about digital is that you can take as much video (or pics) as your memory card will hold. The bad part is, you have to edit all the crap you took just because you thought it would look great

Thanks for the very nice videos, too! Anyone that has ever done any editing knows how much time goes into these! I like how a lot of other FR4x4 videos are linked to these, too. Check out some of Hughs videos as he spends a lot of time on his.

Try this as a starter for some free (and royalty free) music:

http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/

For more, just Google "royalty free music" .

There are a lot of gray areas when it comes to music on videos. If you don't sell it for personal gain, and credit the artist on the video, you are right in the middle of one of the gray areas. Many people do this, including myself...The key words being 'not selling for personal gain' and 'non commercial use'...

I have also used a lot of the 'stock' YouTube music for my videos, too. This is all 'royalty free' music and is easy to use through the You Tube program. You just have to kind of pick and chose what genre and style. Not always what you want, but it comes pretty close a lot of the time. If I am in a hurry, this is what I do a lot. Many of the 'Stargate Vacations' videos I had done have the stock You Tube music on them.

Video editing software:

Try Pinnacle:

http://pinnaclesys.com/preorder14/us/index.htm

but it costs$$. Here is a site for some free video editing software downloads. If JUMPCUT isn't on this site, you might want to check it out, too.

http://freeartsoftware.com/video-editing-software.htm

Editing video sucks....

As far as another source of royalty free music, I have some of my own music you are welcome to use, too. It is world/techno with rock back beat stuff (granted, not for everyone...)...Since this is my own original music, it is royalty free at the moment. Just holler and I'll get you some. It works well for soundtrack stuff. Just credit it to 'These Guys Musick" if you do use it.

Here is a link to two of my videos with some of my own music on it.

This is a rock climbing vid of a hard climb we did in Pentitente Canyon, not a wheeling video, but interesting to watch:

Thanks for all your suggestions! I know youtube sometimes shuts down videos that have copyrighted music in them, so that's mainly why I'm asking for free music. Lots of times, there are many artists that put up their own music on the web in hopes to get discovered, and that's the kind of what I'm looking for. Pete, I do like your music. I don't know your background, but it sounds really good. I like the kind of music that combines different genres, it's different. I would like a copy of some of your music if you don't mind, just to listen too. Should I end up using some of it, I'd definatelly credit the maker(s) :thunb:

I'm also looking for a better editing video, but I have to sort out my PC first. It's capable, it just needs some tlc. I've heard of Pinacle and will probably go with it, I just have to do some more research on what exactly I'm looking for (I've seen other programs too). Not in a hurry though.

I think the reason why the other videos are linked to mine is that I've used keywords Frontrange4x4 and FR4x4. I'll check them out later.

Great vids. I'm glad you got some footage of me to show off.
I've got a little bit more (of you too), just have to find some more quiet time to put them together. I also got Pete, Rob (DrUnit), and you on the rocks at the end. All coming up, just keep checking back here ;)

I was thinking the same thing but now I see it correctly. The light through the trees makes it look like the wheel is bent and part of the chain is the lip of the rim.
