I had a set of the Goodyear MTRs on my heap a few years ago. These were the first generation and I probably would've replaced them with more of the same except that the military was buying them up so fast that there was a serious backorder, especially on the 37x12.50 size.
I liked them. They did fine on everything I stuck them on, rode well on the road, wore and balanced nicely, etc, and were surprisingly quiet. I did get talked into having them siped, which was a mistake as the rubber started chunking off. Even with this, they did very well.
If they made a 38" with a 15" rim size, I might even consider them for when I have to get new tires...anyway, I was happy with them..A lot of people have run them on the site, so you should get quite a bit of other feedback.

I run the old style now in 35/12.50/15. Is anybody running the new ones?

I'm running the old style. I'm planning on just sticking with MT/Rs and picking up the new ones.

They were run on Petersen's 4x4 annual Ultimate Challenge this year, for manufacturer's testing. Nothing negative came of out the article and the drivers seemed to like them.

I run the MTR's now 35x12.5x15's as well. My question is the tread design. No doubt they did it for a reason but the main tread looks offset from center. Does this mean that they are directional tires? Does it have to be offset to the outside or inside? I haven't put much thought into it but if these are directional tires I won't buy them.

Does this mean that they are directional tires?
Yup, they are directional. And, the only negative thing I've heard about them is that since they are directional, the white letters are always on the outside. Not really an issue for me, I could care less if my tires had white letters or not, but I guess it matters to some.
People seem to really like the MT/R with Kevlar as well. They are supposed to have super strong sidewalls.

These ones claim to be 30% stronger than the old MT/R. That's an impressive claim.

They'll never say anything bad about those tires on that show/article, since Goodyear is the title sponsor. In fact, the tend to spend half the time saying that the tires are the only reason they get up the trail at all.
Part of me thinks that the asymetrical nature of those will lead to instability and wandering when climbing and searching for traction. Maybe not though, and you really won't be able to tell without trying them. I'm sure they are a great tire, and I think the Kevlar is in all the new style MTR's now. Don't think you can get them without it, but I could be wrong on that count. Seems a bit gimmicky to me, but I'm a skeptic that way. I'd take bigger side lugs over a layer or two of Kevlar all day though. I bet the conform well, behave well on and off road, and will be a great tire for just about anyone not looking to go super hard core offroad. If you like the current MTR, I imagine the new one will be just as good for your needs.

The MT/Rs come with or without Kevlar. The asymmetrical ones in the first post are the Kevlar ones.
Also, just found out that you can order them with or without white letters.

Well sure, I did specify they were the sponsors so it could be slanted. I didn't get from the article that the tire choice was the reason people made it up the trail.
While they are not asymetrical treads, I liked my Yokohama directional MTs. Pain in the neck when it comes to spares but a very good tire.

Are you saying the old MT/Rs are still in production?

Not sure. That's what it looks like from Goodyears website - http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodyeartireselector/results_tire.jsp?mrktarea=Light+Truck

Just checked on Discount Tire's website and the old MT/R is only available in one size. The new MT/Rs with Kevlar might be replacing them. Not sure.

hmm.......maybe this years was better. Just watched the video from 2005, and they spent about half the time touting up the tires they were on, especially with the voice over. It was BFG's that time, and I think they used the Krawlers.
I do like that the new version has a lot more aggresive side wall lugs, which I suspect has as much to do with the sidewall strength as the Kevlar does.

From what I gathered, the old MT/Rs are still available until sold out (naturally). And they are phasing the new ones in.

Kevlar might help out a little but not much as far as protection. As a security officer, when I have to wear my vest, I am more afraid of the guy with a knife than the gun. You can still stab a knife through Kevlar.
Knowing that... I wouldn't spend the money to have it in my tire if I know it wont save my life. I would go with a bigger lugged side wall as well.

I have the original MTR's on my FJC and they have never let me down on the trail. Looks like I can get one more year with these tires. I will most likely put the Kevlar MTR's on the FJC when I move to 35's :thunb: that's only if I can get them without RWL.

No the new MTRs come with kevlar only. And only in certain sizes do they come without white lettering

No everybody is burning up whats left in the warehouses.

Correct. Also they arent directional but asymmetrical. Meaning their is no left and right side. They look like a great tire and from everybody i have talked to they love them. I also run 2 sets of MTRs but they are the old tread and i love them. They have such great road manners and they really stick to the rocks.

I have not been impressed at all by the MT/R's of the past. I am hoping these are better. I would most likely still go with the BFG's still however. Once a tire has proven itself it's hard to stray away from it

I have heard a lot of good things about those tires.
I don't know what I am going to get when I need new tires. Unless I have a job making enough money to be choosey, price is going to override on road performance.
Since I don't really care too much about on road stuff on my heap, even though I drive it too and from trails, there is a good chance that I am going to just go with the Swamper TSL in a radial.
Of course, if I have the $$, I may stick with the Nittos as they are wearing and performing very well. They are just about $100++ each more than the Swampers..
Obviously noise isn't a big issue with me...

It'd be cool to find somebody that went from KM2s to the new MT/Rs and get their take on it. I've heard nothing but good things about the new MT/Rs. I have the KM2s, but there is no way for me compare the two untill I use the new MT/Rs.

Nice writeups. It sounds like people like both. The KM2s are coming in cheaper right now. I still might get the MT/Rs.
LOL, I guess it don't matter until I wear these MT/Rs bald!!!...

I know that feeling. I think my current tires are going to get lower in the tread before I replace them than my last set. Too bad we don't live closer to some real dunes. We could simply ride dunes for quite awhile on our bald tires with some success instead of rocky trails...

Looks like i'm one of the few that hated the old style MT/R's. I put them on and they were great offroad. on-road... not so much. i would slide on dry pavement. couldn't wait to get them off. The new MT/R's do look like they have promise. although being directional i think i'd rather go with the new BFG MT.

The MT/Rs are about $$25/tire more than the BFGs for 35s. This will be a tough decision!....

What size and prices are you seeing? I see them both exactly the same ($297) for 35x12.5x17 from DiscountTireDirect (tax free, free shipping).
