Just dropped the 4 speed trans out of the Brat tonight. I love the fact that I can pull my own trans/tcase/diff with no help in my garage. Doing that at a boneyard, is another story. But it's not so bad on a concrete slab with a jack underneath.

Now I have to get to modifying the mounts for the new 5 speed. And one of the trans mounts on the 4 speed, fell apart as I dropped the trans. So I'd say that one was toast.

I am jealous! I pulled my tranny out 3 times and each one was at least as hard, if not harder, than the time before! I am pretty sure my tranny and xfer case weigh more than I do.

Yeah but your trans + xfer case probably weigh about half of what his BRAT does

Nice. Getting on it dude. May as well when you are already covered in grease and such. Steve, trust me, that tranny was waaaaay easier to work with then yours, mostly because of size. The 5 speed we got from the junkyard was heavier then I thought it would be, but then I realized that it had a tranny, transfer case, and a differential inside on big (big being relative) casing. That whole thing probably weighed about the same or less then your t-case by itself though, and was much smaller.

Mitchell, let me know if you need a hand getting the new tranny in. You shouldn't have any issues with jacking it up into place, but if you need another set of hands I can come down sometime this week to help.

Yeah, I remember those days from my Subarus. The transmissions are deceiving. You don't expect them to be heavy, but then you remember everything encased within them!

FYI, if you plan on putting in a new clutch disk, make sure you check the splines by sliding the disk over the shaft. There are some VERY minor differences in splines on the clutch disks between 2wd and 4wd as well as from year to year. They are close but not quite. Will drive you nuts with the wrong one!

We grabbed the disc and pressure plate off the "donor" vehicle, so that should be fine as long as it bolts to the Brats flywheel. He probably will have to find a alignment tool though, as the pattern is likely different then the one he has for his Legacy. Good times.

I likely have an alignment tool if needed. If I remember right, there is a pressed in pilot bearing. That may need to be changed out to match the new trans. I believe I only did clutch work on 84 and older. Won't have 85 and newer which is what had the 4x4 and 5 speed.

that extra gear will be nice to have.
