So i tried posting this a few days ago, but the computer is being....

So in the last 2 months i've been stockpiling stuff to upgrade the audio and communications in my car. This includes a new stereo system and a CB radio.

I'll start with the stereo. All this stuff came from Crutchfield.com this is a great place because they tell you what works in your car and what wont, also great customer service. All included is a Kenwood KDC-138 Headunit, 6.5" KFC-1660S speakers (rear), 5.25" KFC-1362S speakers (front), speaker baffles for both sets, new AM/FM antenna, and all the wiring harnesses and jazz that crutchfield sends with their stuff.

The CB is a Cobra 18WXSTII with a 4' Firestik tuneable tip antenna mounted on a door jamb mount with a heavy duty spring.

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh27/shotgun12321/1260213217.jpg

Both the stereo and CB are going into the existing double DIN spot that the factory stereo is occupying at the moment. It will look something like this.

Also while me and my dad were :wrench:in' to see how to remove the dash, we decided to fix the bushing in my shifter which caused a lot of left-right freeplay in it. We opened up the housing and saw that one bushing was cracked in half and the other had completely disintegrated.

Now that it's fixed, it works great! I'll keep ya'll posted with some pics of the install as it happens, still waiting for a little warmer temps to do it :thunb:

What an upgrade! My Toyota's will both be jealous!

The shifter bushing piece is known to fail in more than one vehicle. Early Subaru's were known for that in any gear. Felt like it was in N based on the side/side movement.

Nice!

InsanityIsBorn
December 9th, 2009, 10:29 PM
So tell me where exactly is that bushing located? I have a feeling it will be stupid easy to notice if I go look, but just in case, cuz I have like 6 feet of side to side play in 1st-4th gear

Mporter
December 9th, 2009, 10:47 PM
Well mine is automatic but there is a bolt that connects the shifter to the trans, it basically encircles that on the inside the area that connects the 2 sides. Pretty easy once you get in it, except you need to disconnect th bolt from both sides, which is kinda a pain in the ass

Nice work, one of the best upgrades so far on my cruiser was the stereo system, I did it all in about 1 day and for under 300 bucks. I also love it when you go to replace something and find out it's completely toast, and probably original.

thats right, I forgot the 62 has the auto stock.. not the manual like I have now haha.

The best mod I did to my 62was the manual transmission for sure. Then the Scion radio.

Looking good Matt, any progress on installing it?

Kiel, a bit young to be forgetting stuff like that.

Not so far. Still a little too cold for my taste to be out in the garage working on this stuff. Maybe this weekend though

Chris
December 11th, 2009, 02:59 PM
You should be at CORE, not your garage. I need to see your 62!

Mporter
December 11th, 2009, 07:03 PM
Haha I wish I could go. But I'm working 8-4 tomarrow

but it looks like Sunday is when all this radio stuff is gonna go in, since it's gonna be a high of 47

InsanityIsBorn
December 11th, 2009, 08:13 PM
Man I wish I could go to CORE with y'all. wow 47? lucky! and also Chris, yes you are right I am WAAaAY to young to forget what our Cruisers came with stock... I think It was a forced forget, where I wanted to forget the horrors it caused.

I've been thinking about putting a manual in mine (not too intently though). What kind do you have? I know H55f is a popular one. Also does whatver one you have require any chopping of the floorpan?

InsanityIsBorn
December 11th, 2009, 09:34 PM
I went with the H42 (the H42 has a higher low gear, the H41 is the aussie spec 4 speed with a 4.99:1 gearing in 1st gear. The H42 has 4:1, and the H55f has a 1st of 4.84:1 and 5th gear of .84:1 whereas the H42 only has a 4th gear of 1:1) Mine is the 4speed the H55f is the 5speed. You don't have to cut the floor for either. All you need for a manual tranny is a few parts from a donor FJ60.
-clutch slave and master cylinders
-transmission
-x-member
-bellhousing
-flywheel
-new driveshafts
-clutch lines
-pedal bucket
-tranny hump
-Clutch lines

I did it in a half week, but I ran into a lot of problems where I learned, and realized I had the wrong parts or my brothers spares that I took were broken haha. When I had all the right parts I finished it in a weekend.

Also, to mount the cross member, you must either move you brake lines a bit, or do some welding. But the welding is in a fairly easy location.

The H41 is the ideal transmission if you cannot afford the H55f, as it is geared at 4.99 in first, and a 4speed manual is much better than any auto. But if you do a lot of highway driving I highly recommend the H55f, I can hit about 70mph at 3100 rpms with my H42. All in all H55f is my recommendation for lots of highway driving. H41 is good for more 4wheeling and around town driving. H42 should be your last choice, in my opinion that is.

Hope this long winded post helps!

Kiel's info is good and I agree with what he says. Just do like I did and blow the auto up far from home & close to a cruiser shop where the owner has an FJ62 with a 5 speed. Makes decision making easy and all you have to do is sell your project truck to finance it.

InsanityIsBorn
December 11th, 2009, 11:52 PM
I remember when you had to do that.. it made me sad.... I would have loved to purchase the pig from you but money said no. And yes that makes decision making easy. Funny thing is you blew your tranny the same weekend I start sourcing parts to swap mine out.

Also I remembered another part, unnecessary, but makes a nicer looking interior. Get matching interior carpet for the front from a fj60. I have the fj62 carpet in still with 3 holes in it and it makes a lot of road noise through those holes. Its amazing how much noise is can be blocked by a half inch of carpeting. Once again you don't need it though, just a nice extra to have.

So in the last 2 months i've been stockpiling stuff to upgrade the audio and communications in my car. This includes a new stereo system and a CB radio.

Just noticed this and must say
"how can you stockpile stuff for your cruiser?? When I get something new it goes in IMMEDIATELY, I get too excited." haha even if I only have half of the items I need to get something working what I have is in regardless haha

It wasn't fun but I'd rather have the 5 speed than the Pig any day. Here's where you don't want to end up Matt. A week of abusing in the tranny in Moab, 90 mph on the highway and a blocked cooler turns out bad.

Yeh it looks like fun chris. Also Kiel I have wanted to just not had the time. Plus I'd rather have it all go in at once instead of leaving gaps in my dash/ exposed stuff etc

Take out the rear panels the speaker cover is mounted to it and comes off in one go. You have to pull out the little blue things and it shouldnt be too bad. iirc that is.

See that's what I thought, but then I had another epiphany that it had to be easier than that.....But hey, Toyota did require taking the entire dash off, disconnecting the speedometer cable just to get to the 4 bolts that hold the radio in.

UPDATE: the CB and Kenwood H/U are pretty much an exact fit in the stock toyota mounting bracket :thunb:

Not too mention it is the most impossible thing to connect/disconnect the speedo cable from the dash...

Speedo tip: there is some slack, gently pull towards dash, you may gain enough to reconnect w/o being a contortionist!

I did that and got like an inch haha. Then got under the truck cut some zip tie style things and gave me another 1in. But now with the manual the length of the transmission is much shorter so I have plenty of play in it! Its actually the easiest thing to connect to the dash!

Still havent gotten the stereos in the dash yet, but the radio works, speaker works, CB works.

Basically tomarrow we are gonna mount the antenna and tune the CB, then probably get all the stuff buttoned up and in the dash.

as far as 2 days is concerned, yeah.

New speakers are so much better....then again, the fronts were 10W and now are 28W (peak at 150) and the rears were 15W, now 32W (peak 170) so they are much better. I decided to use the stock mesh grilles for the backs because that way the metal grate could still be used. One thing i learned though, if you put new higher wattage speakers in a car still powered by a factory stereo....and shake/rock the car, it will cause static

Thanks, yeah basically Toyota makes their vehicles (at least older ones) solid as a rock. You have to remove probably 10-12 screws in various spots on the dash, pull the bottom half of the dash out then the top, disconnect speedometer cable, and THEN you can get to the 4 tiny bolts that hold the stereo bracket to the dash.

it's so much better, thanks for the comments.

I basically doubled my RMS wattage with all the new speakers 10/15 to 28/32.

Anyone know what the stock stereo pushes for speaker wattage? Because it's obviously not high enough to run these new speakers.

If you are going for bang for buck, IMO, it's better to change out the headunit for a brand new one and using stock speakers. Of course, if the stock speakers are blown, they will never sound good.

On my 96 I replaced the head unit and it really made my stock speakers sound awesome. I then changed out the stock speakers for polk audio 6.5"s all around. Now it rocks.!:2thumbs:

Well we would be done if my CB wasnt being stupid. As it turns out, finding a ground is tougher than it looks....We touch the ground wire to the head of some screws, good ground, radio turns on. We unbolt the screw and secure the ground wire to it, turn on radio....nothing, just a faint glow of the channel indicator. Long story short, im leaving the cruiser at home (again) and taking the Bronco to work tomarrow while pops tries to figure it out.

Did you try to sand down the area behind the screw? Sometimes there will be dirt, paint or some other substance that will block the connection from being stronger.

What I have done is to get a basic grounding block-a piece of metal that has mounting holes and multiple allen head tightening bolts in it-ground this directly to the battery ground and ground all my accessories to that. Also by mounting the block to any part of the body adds an additional body ground.

You can find these at Radio Shack or in the electrical section of Ace, Lowes or Depo.

Looks like it might be a problem with the radio.

Long story short, probably gonna send it back to cobra.

Ron at Rocky Mountain Cruisers said he's gonna have a nice FJ40 up for sale soon. 350 small block chevy, auto trans, 4-5" lift, and 35s. Was a pretty cool looking cruiser.

As my dear friend lefty would say "if its got t*ts or tires, ya can't afford it." Yeah autos aren't all bad thou. Just all depends on application. Example haha i hate this story but an auto would of saved my ass here. My dad has a 2000 F350 with a slightly beefed up V10 in it, granted its not the diesel its still got enough balls for what we haul and do. My 77 lost the front transmission pump up at slaughter house in the park between the two hill climbs. My dad got his truck back there and started to pull me out. Well after pulling my truck up some of the little steps all you could smell is his clutch. I resorted to using a 4 ton come along from his receiver to one of my recovery points for a few hours. I am pretty sure i would still be there today if it wasn't for a dodge 2500 that showed up at 10 o'clock at night. With that said it still took My dads V10 chained to the Dodge 2500 Chained to Me. One recovery mission later, i was paying for a dual friction heavy duty clutch for my dads truck. Lesson learned if your gonna tow, use and auto. haha But i still like my standards to go play with and mess around in, there just more fun. And When i drive an auto i don't know what to do with my right hand, main reason my 77 is getting converted to a 4 spd.

man that turned out real damn good matt!!!! I have a single ported 12" sub in a box for free if you want, just slap a amp on it and you have some bump :) and yes free.

Mporter
January 10th, 2010, 07:56 PM
Well if it's free, i'd be happy to take it off your hands. The bass is a little lacking, but that's because they are just the speakers and no amp/subs.
