View Full Version : Pole Hill snow run II 1-10-10

Another excellent snow run at Pole Hill today. Much warmer and conditions were a little better on the trails we hit last week, but we ran a section we didn't run last week and had some digging, strapping, winching, pushing and blasting going on. Big difference for me in the 40 vs. the FJC last week, with about 3 inches less clearance. Thanks to Mark (Flexytoy) for dragging me back up the loop hill and thanks to Pete for winching me over the last hill on the way out (after creating huge ruts with his monster tires, which overwhelmed the 40). I think I'll try it next week in my wife's RAV4 and make it a hat trick.

Good to meet some new folks and run again with others, including those who did today's PH run and last week's PH run.

The only carnage I recall was when Pete's passenger-side hub blew off.

Now for some pics.

Home safe and unpacked, man that was fantastic! A huge thank you to everyone for making our first real trail run with the group a total success. Special thanks to Pete for the winch out. Rhino performed better than I could have hoped for, especially with the tires aired down. On this sort of trail the long wheel base actually helped in the sloppy stuff. Anyways, karla and I agree the day couldn't have been more fantastic!

As always, pictures and video to come tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing the ones I'm sure Kubo got of me getting past the hard part of the hill and then getting pulled right into a big snowbank!! LOL!!

What a great run! Once again it was great to see everyone, meet some fine new folks and put faces to names. Thanks for all the pulls, anchors, tugs and winching that everyone did for my heap, too...and you are more than welcome for the thank yous! It was also nice to finally be able to do the trail instead of holding everyone up like I did with my stuck last year...Great having Kubo as a passenger, too!

Pretty trail and a pretty area. Looks to be some really nice snowshoe/x skiing, mountain biking (summer) stuff back in there, too. Fun for me as almost all of the stuff I have ever done around Estes has revolved around rock or ice climbing, which meant that this area was all new ground.

Home safe and sound. Rob followed me back to my place in his Nissan to grab some Ford springs for his lift. These were the springs that Mike was giving away last year, so they got recycled to a good home!

The Nissan did great with some air out of the tires. Charley's Jeep looks great in person with the new lift and tires and seemed to pretty much hike everything.

Great day today, I'm glad I came along. Pete, thanks again for letting me ride with you, I had a good time! Your truck is totally something else, I like it :fing: I've snapped away pictures and video today, but the video won't be up for a few days. I promise I'll hurry up with it, but I have a lot of editing to do to trim away the boring stuff ;) I've just watched a part where Andrew and Todd blasted through the deep snow at full speed and man, they were both moving!!
I did manage to get the pictures up to my webshots album though. Check here for the slidehow: http://good-times.webshots.com/slideshow/576284201HrBJEo I'll post some good ones on here tomorrow, way too tired now.

Looks like fun! If I hadn't been going to Illinois Gulch the day before I could have come. Looks like the trail is still very doable with a couple thicker parts. It's a good trail for a snow run too - no ledges and cliffs and drop offs and such.

In SubCool's pictures where we are all lined up in the meadow and there are a couple of rigs stuck on a mild looking hill in front of the FR group was the worst section. It didn't look like anything at all, but there was a wind blown drift right at the trees with just a bit of off camber and a couple of very badly placed holes. If you missed your line just a bit, or didn't take it with enough momentum, you drifted right off the trail into the deeper section and got very thoroughly stuck. You can see Josh's Yota buried as well as the Rhino Burbie of Ash and Karla. When Andrew got his Dodge stuck in it, the snow was about half way up his headlights... Almost everyone had to get a tug or winch out from here, or were able to winch themselves out. Typical winter stuff-the sections you would hardly notice even driving a stock rig provided the most entertainment.

Once again: Thanks for all the help winching, pulling, anchoring, etc. It was a gas!

Hope that you had fun on Illinois Gulch!

I also had a wonderful day thanks to great company with great wheelin! I was the smart one who didn't bring my camera, but still hard to forget a day like this. Everyone drove with much skill and I was very impressed. Even with the one spot with very deep snow, I think it still only took around an hour to get our entire group through (minus those who turned back up the hill).
All in all, Thank you to everyone. Can't wait for the next one.:smokin:

Yeah it did. Mark said it was due to the bolts loosening a little and binding up. It has happened before and, instead of the stock internal gear that I run breaking, which is the reason I run the stock gear and carry three spares, the whole hub blasts of, shearing 6 grade studs and two harder pins. He said that he has had experience with this as well as as friend of his and has started re torqueing the bolts at least every other run. I am going to follow his lead on this as it is a real PITA to get the broken studs out...

It broke right at the top of the hill where I was backing up and then driving down to winch people.

What hub? WARN? I have heard that the regular studs they use in them suck and people bust them all the time. What grade? I'll be putting allen-head bolts, 10.9 in mine when I install them.

Oh dang!

Yeah...oh dang. At least I now know what has been causing the problem and to add it to my tightening list that I normally do every two weeks or so. I have a couple of other rotors plus hubs around for back ups so it isn't too big of a deal. Nothing like a winter run with a bunch of recovery going on to bring out weak points. I noticed a couple of other ones, too: The rear winch has a 'sweet spot' that it engages in and obviously a couple of broken teeth on the gear inside. It will only fully engage in that one spot. I have known about this for awhile, but due to lack of funds for replacement parts, have held off on rebuilding and repacking both winches. Another thing was that, when I buried the rear winch in the bed, I placed the remote box too close to the spare, so I had to loosen the spare tire to move it 3/8" over to get the plug in. I had noticed that before, but hadn't fixed it...oh well...stuff to do....

Maybe posting this will have other people checking stuff on their rigs a little more frequently, too...obvious and not so obvious...

I might need to go find one of those hub assemblies myself, or if you'd be willing to let one go. I got home, and my passenger side hub was too hot to touch. Something weird going on with that. I'm planning on rebuilding the knuckles in the very near future, and do a general axle RnR on it anways, so I'll find out then. It was making some weird noises yesterday (creaking groaning noises). Did notice that it was close, but not completely unlocked when I went to lock them yesterday, so that might have something to do with it. Worst case scenario I'll just go junkyarding, or go talk to Yota Jim.

Had another great day yesterday, and got just stuck enough to have fun and have an adventure, but not enough to feel bad about it. The rest of the trail was fun but easy, and I had a ton of fun being up front and bombing through the woods. Would have been fun to have a few more obstacles to try out, but it was a good time and a great day to be outdoors.

Cheers,

JH

Josh..Junkyard 'em either at Colorado Auto Parts or a Pull and Pay..LC rotors are what you want with the straight axle hubs. The straight axle hubs from any of the LCs or older Yotas work. You find the set up at a jukyard, you can get the set for about $40. Yota Yard or Yoda Jims will charge you closer to $100. Both Colorado Auto and U Pull It on 64th and Pecos had 60s, but minus the Aisen hub, which are hard to find.

I am hanging on to mine...Your hub heating up is usually the sign of a wheel bearing that is either going or is badly in need of a repack.

Cool........thanks Brody. I'm planning on doing the axle rebuild very soon, and was planning on doing the wheel bearings along with the knuckle. I'll probably go hit up Colorado Auto Parts in the next couple days and see if I can find a hub and rotor assembly. You have to have the big ole axle nut socket thing to get those off right? Any other tips for getting them off at the Junkyard?

JH

No, not really. The 54mm socket (I got the Trail Gear one with the 3/8 drive), a 17mm for the caliper bolts, a 10 and 12 for the Aisen hub. Also a hammer and a couple of screwdrivers are nice to have. Chances are you are going to find stuff in the air with the hubs gone and the 54mm nuts exposed with just the caliper on. People strip the Aisen hubs as they are being pulled into the lot, I think...Make sure to pick up any of the cone washers and studs you see lying around too, as Toyota gets way too much money for these...

Yes, it was a great day to have a winch. Would have been a great day to have a 200amp alternator and a deep cycle batter too. I had a similar problem to Winky on the Ironclads run, just not quite as serious

Haku
January 12th, 2010, 02:35 AM
That Smittybuilt wince is notoriously slow, but will get the job done. Gotta trade something off for the price those go for. Certainly wouldn't hurt to have the upgraded alternator and battery, though good luck finding a 200amp one hahaa. Probably can, just can't imagine they are cheap. Most people seem to be going for the Odyssey Batteries these days over the Optima ones. Not sure why, but that's what I've noticed.

What hub? WARN? I have heard that the regular studs they use in them suck and people bust them all the time. What grade? I'll be putting allen-head bolts, 10.9 in mine when I install them.

Actually, there's not really a strength problem with those bolts. They bolt into wimpy cast aluminum, anyway. One of the biggest issues is when people overtighten them and strip out the aluminum. Then they just 'walk' out and the hub explodes. Those bolts don't support anything while you're driving, so the most important thing is that they're torqued to spec, and no tighter.

I recently blew up 2 warn premiums on one side due to a leaky spindle seal (seal and bearings now replaced). I'm now using Warn regulars which seem to be just as good. The only downside is the engagement mechanism.

The stock Aisen hubs are some of the strongest hubs on the market, even stronger than the Warn hubs. The weak point is usually the inner gear, not the mating surface or the bolts on the Toyotas. Toyota uses a very hard bolt and pins (6 bolts, two pins), in fact so strong that a hardened steel drill bit barely touches them, so I think that these are grade 10 or better. The pins are even harder. It is not a good idea to replace the Aisen hubs with an after market hub such as a Warn. This applies to Yotas for the most part as Warn hubs are usually an upgrade from stock hubs on anything else.

The hub on the Yotas is also steel rather than aluminum, too, so that you don't have the weakness of the aluminum to deal with. As Mark pointed out, my bolts probably loosen over time which causes the hub to bind up and shear the bolts off. Like I said, I have been using the stock inner gear rather than a hardened inner gear so as to have a weak point in the front end that will break before an expensive or harder to fix part. For the most part, this has worked fine and I usually have 2-3 inner gears in my tool box/trail fix junk.

Ahh! Well yeah I decided to go with the allen head bolts simply because you can't really torque those too tight very easily, and getting my torque wrench in there on the hub would be a bit of a pain probably.

Maybe because Optimas are made in China now, instead of our own backyard. At least that was the case two years ago. After that, our Optima battery sales went down drastically (I was working at Autozone). I got an US made Optima three or four years ago for $20 when they were selling used batteries for $20. Some new employee took back a 7 month old Optima that he thought was bad, turned out it was fine after I've charged it. Mine! Still running strong

Yeah, you two winches into a dark comfortable room overnight.....wait, wait, wait...

Here is one of the recovery threads here:

http://www.frontrange4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?2136-Recovery-Gear-Recovery-Gear-Instruction-Site&highlight=recovery

This is a huge reference and may be one of the best:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Recovery/

(The BillaVista link is also in both the winch section and recovery section)

And another from Front Range:

http://www.frontrange4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?3653-Recovery-and-general-check-list&highlight=recovery

And yet another. This last one has a link to Warn's site which has some good information on winching in general.

http://www.frontrange4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?2134-WINCHES-Rebuilding-Parts-Information-Diagrams-Testing-Sites&highlight=recovery

Essentially, you run the winch line through a pulley, then back to your rig making a 'V', ALMOST doubling your pulling power. Running another pulley (or snatch block) off of your rig and then back to the anchor (now making a 'W') more or less triples your pulling power. What we were doing the other day on Pole Hill were exclusively single line pulls where the winches were attached directly to the anchor or stuck rig with no snatch block. Even when the snatch blocks were used, they were used to direct the pull of the winch line rather than to increase the pulling power. You will need to read the snatch block/pulley stuff to get a better understanding of what kind of a numerical increase adding one or more pulleys generate, as what I explained was very simplified.

Youtube isn't down guys, you just need to give it some time to process the videos. Especially for the longer ones, it takes some time to transfer it from video to flash. If you consider that its probably at its largest load right after people get off at work, and the entire world is trying to upload videos, its rather impressive that it can deal like it does. Its actually an almost mind boggling amount of processing power when you get down and really think about it. hehee.......so just go relax and watch some of these....

Well, you better stop, because by the time I'm done you'll be so depressed you might do something crazy, and I don't want that on my conscience :D

I always thought it'd be cool if people did vids like that. be even greater if they were paid!!
Hey, that'd be REALLY nice now wouldn't it? Btw, if anybody has a bunch of unedited videos they would like looking something like mine, just let me know. I'm a pretty creative guy and could use the money. Just saying, you know :fing:

Nope. I'd be having too much fun with people. What? You're thinking about jumping off the building? Awesome, I've always wanted to try base jumping! ...Hello? :smokin:

Ok, so this is the last video from this trip. I've had so much fun working on these with my new video program (MAGIX) that it got me thinking about looking into some classes on digital media production. I got the program on Tuesday and in two days I've figured out how to use most of it (there's still plenty to learn though). I really enjoy doing this kinda stuff. I'm serious, if anybody would like me to edit their home/work videos, I'd be happy to for a reasonable fee.

Hey Kubo

Stick this under the 'Member Skills' section too.

He is doing a really good job with the videos and needs some extra bucks, so if you have some videos, you will be both helping a fellow FR4x member and getting a quality product, too.

Sorry...I hit edit this post instead of reply..since all of Kubo's stuff is still here, I didn't change it....

At any rate, take him up on his offer....

Boy, you got some sharp eyes! I just did that...and no, I couldn't resist. I don't do that too much, just every now and then...Usually no one catches it....
