I saw it on the news, basically they want to reduce the penalties for public nudity for some of their events like Naked Bike Ride or for the streakers. No longer, if the law is passed will they be required to register as sex offenders if they are sited with indecent exposure during one of the events or if it was part of a streaking prank.
To me this is no different than the guy flashing a school bus full of kids or the guy flashing a woman on the street.
You can smoke weed in public, run or ride a bike naked in the streets, but heaven forbid you should be caught legally carrying a gun.

Yeah, one way to look at it, but most people you see that get nailed for indecent exposure have no business wearing a bathing suit in public, much less running around naked.
This is just one more reason to stay the hell away from there.

Feel the same about The Independent of Boulder as I do seems like...About the only place I can think of this side of the Mason Dixon Line where cigarettes should be thrown on the ground...
We do have someone living in Boulder on the forum, BTW, I just saw that after one of MY Boulder rants....It used to be a lot nicer and friendlier place to live (or visit) ....30 years ago..

Congadulations Matt!
CU is an excellent educational facility, despite being in a weird town.
You'll soon find there are many different types of people that live there. You won't have any problems finding freinds that are into the same stuff you are.

Yes we always make the news for unique things don't we? For me, I wouldn't live anywhere else, we love the Republic, probably will not leave unless job or some other issue moves us out. I wasn't around in the cool days, so this is the only Boulder I know. For me, it's not perfect, but it's got about the best mix of people/jobs/recreation/vibe that I can get for myself.

My first experience with Boulder was in the early 70s too, and I got to see it go downhill and turn into the Independent Republic of Boulder where people are sooooooooo into things..Too bad that the things that they are sooooo into happen to be themselves...
The best things going for it are the fact that it does have a very good school and the bonus fact that you are outnumbered 4 to 1 by the women. The last fact is the only reason that I am glad I didn't go to school there for a degree....I never would have gotten any studying done ...
Congratulations!

This is the overiding thing I think about when I think of Boulder these days.....

That said, I lived there for 5 years. I will say that there are some nice things about it, but its also really silly. Expensive for no reason, lots of tude, and some of the screwiest laws I have ever heard of too. It has this "hippy" image, but in honesty it has more of yuppie middle aged ecomentalist vibe these days, and it gets worse every year too. CU plays a huge roll in the character of the town too, and not in a good way.
Mporter, the school is a great school and you'll have an awesome time. The students are overidingly cool people too. But there are a certain portion of them that ruin the image of the rest of the school and drive me nuts. It is such a better place to live during the Summer when school is out of session. No crazy drivers, you can actually drive down Broadway in the middle of the day without it taking half an hour. You do still get the stupid people that live there full time (again, the residents are for the most part pretty cool and worth living around, but there are a small group that ruin the town again). Peds and Bikes that just zoom out in to traffic and expect you to stop, stupid laws and police people, and lots of other stuff. I actually had a Bicycle Cop throw herself through my car window one night. Half her body was in my car and she was yelling and pissed off, because I pulled out of my parking space as I was turning my headlights on. Just silly. Ok, enough about Boulder. Enjoy the poop song.

That is the Boulder version of a true s**thead....and FS to boot. No wonder they are grading the trails we like. This ass is probably upper echelon....
I lived in Boulder all of 6 months back in the late 90s....I am glad that I left. My intolerant attitude simply doesn't work in Boulder and I probably would have ended up in jail...

I try not ot get out of my truck while I'm there. It's merely a gateway to the mountains...I stopped at a Safeway there with my dad to get ice cream, and the cashier gave my dad a high five for buying ice cream. She tried to give me one, I grabbed the receipt and left.

I was born and raised in Boulder. Once my parents sold their house and moved to Steamboat, I was more than happy to leave. Boulder is not the same place it was when I was growing up. That said, I like to visit the freak show every now and then, but their policies are just stupid retarted

Yeah....welcome to Boulder. That is just ludicrous that people should get a fine that at all for that. That is just one of many reasons I would never purchase a house in Boulder county. Why it all of a sudden becomes the home owners responsibility to provide for the safety of the public when walking on public thoroughfare is beyond me.

It should be no one's responsibility. Don't like snow on the sidewalks, then don't live where it snows. Pretty simple. Snow makes your life harder, don't take it out on everyone else :)

actually most places in the US that is true. Almost all cities have ordinances saying you have to shovel the sidewalk, just like you have to mow the grass on that little strip on the other side of the sidewalk, which technically is not yours, it is the cities. I agree that people should be shoveling their sidewalks for the the sake of others, especially if it is more than a couple inches. I always do my best to clear off my sidewalks as all of the bus stops in my neighborhood are across the street from my house so I see a lot of little kid traffic in front of my place. There are also a lot of elderly people in my neighborhood that like to get out for a walk during the day, and I dont want them to deal with slipping around on my sidewalk. Nor do I need the huge hassle of someone actually getting hurt on my sidewalk. However, that said I do not agree with this law at all. Way to hard to enforce, and where do you draw the lines on everything. If these college kids these days would wear real practical shoes instead of the rediculous things that are worn purely for "fashions" sake this wouldnt be an issue at all. I made the fiance walk back in the house the other day and change shoes because it had just snowed and she couldnt make it down the driveway to my truck without my help. I said no, I will help you when you have real shoes on, but go inside and change. Also, like all the comments at the end of medics link... you can enforce me shovelling my sidewalks when you plow my street. My street rarely gets plowed, and never withing 24 hours. Usually it is about 2 weeks later if I see a plow at all.

I worked at CU back in the late 90's and that was enough to convince me to never live there. The place smells like burned weed and smelly hippies. CU is a good school, but it has large class sizes, force-fed "diversity", and a higher price tag than needed. It is no better than any other public university, and it certainly is not Ivy League. If I was a mainstream 18yo kid looking for a place to get educated, I would look elsewhere. On the other hand, if I was a left-wing fanatic that was all about dreadlocks, birkenstocks, weed, and dad's trust fund, this would be the place to go...

Forgot to factor in the 4-5 to one women outnumbering the dudes ratio which balances that out a bit...Of course you have to be into the 'European woman' look..unshaved pits and legs (we have always called the Boulder women "monkey women") to have the ratio really work in your favor...At any rate, you will still be outnumbered, but maybe only 2-3 to 1...:lmao:

Not sure that I would define a left wing fanatic that way, since most are more ecomentalist clean cut liberal types, but I certainly hate the "trustafarian" types, as we called them when I lived there.
The ones that really get me are the rich kids who pan handle on Pearl Street in Boulder. They hover in front of the restaurants and beg for food and money. I actually saw one punk get up from his panhandling spot, walk over to his $50k SUV, grab something out of it, and then walk back over and start panhandling again. If I was a more violent person and it wasn't Boulder, then I would have kicked the kids ass. Alas, I am not, so I just laughed and rolled my eyes. If kids want to do that ****, then go get a busking license like the legit guys there and put on an act and actually do some work.

And since I have absolutely no problem with violence, these panhandlers, especially the more aggressive ones, are the ones that I did apply some real time violence to. I had a real problem with the aggressive panhandlers who didn't seem to grasp the fact that when some people say"Get the f*** out of my way" that they actually mean it and are only going to say it one time before someone gets hurt. I hit more people in the 6 months that I lived there than in the previous 2 -3 years. I didn't care what kind of cars they had....One of the many reasons I left. Sooner or later I was going to get tagged with an assault charge. I heard many a "Oh wow, dude! That is just, like, so uncool" right after I sorted some of those asses out...including from the lady I was seeing at the time...She actually was under the impression that you talk to everyone...I actually think so too, but some people have to be hit before you get their attention...
This was back in the late 90s and I gather that Boulder has actually done something about all the panhandlers since then. This is good as I didn't find anything charming, novel, or unique about them at all. They were, in fact, seriously disrupting my very own karmic space...:D

I like Longmont's approach to sidewalk clearing. We have the same ordinance here, but the city never enforces it. They hand out the occasional warning, but have never actually ticketed anyone. Can you say useless ordinance?
