It's got all the basics in it. First aid really comes down to how creative you can get with what you've got. I'd probably go with this one: http://www.nols.edu/store/product.php?productid=16508&cat=282&page=1 It's considerably less, and the only major difference is the amount of gauze it comes with. Gauze is fairly cheap. It can also be made yourself. A standard sized T-Shirt will make some 30' of gauze if you cut it in a spiral form up the length of the shirt. Boil it and it's sterile. Either or would be good, just depends on how much you want to spend. Gauze is cheap http://www.buyemp.com/product/1111002.html you get 100 pads for 6 bucks.

February 19th, 2010, 10:33 PM
Same goes for you Chris. The buy EMP website does free shipping on all orders over 100$. None of it's really rocket science. The drugs are what you've got to be careful with, especially the Asprin. I would not advise giving this to anyone in a medical emergency. Take it yourself for pain, but don't give it to anyone else. It can potentially cause problems.
After everything gets ordered and arrives I'd be more than happy to run a small first aid course to answer any questions and such for everyone's new equipment.
Some things that are really useful:
http://www.nols.edu/store/product.php?productid=16513&cat=256&bestseller These can be used for nearly everything!!!!!! You can also make them yourself out of old shirts and sheets and such...Much cheaper that way.
http://www.nols.edu/store/product.php?productid=16259&cat=256&page=2 These are pretty cool! great bandages. Once on, you can't even tell it's there.
Roller gauze is also pretty useful. Make sure you've got some heavy duty medical grade tape. You don't want to use duct tape on the skin, it can rip it off if it stays on for any length of time. If it's on gauze that's OK just not directly on the skin.

Yea, Pete sent me a message as well. We're still working on details. For those that are interested I mentioned www.buyemp.com in a previous post, all orders over 100$ from here receive free shipping so check it out as well. Possibly get an order there as well. They have a lot more of the individual items. It's a great place to buy the Cravats (triangular bandages) A box of 12 is just over 7$

Forgot to mention that his site information got messed up and didn't cross over to his new site like it should have. He is in the process of having to manually transfer all the information over by hand. I am going to be checking in with him at the end of the month for both the FR discounts and whatever he is going to contribute to the giveaway. I'll post up whenever his site is operational. He wasn't a very happy man about the state of the website when I talked to him...
What I am going to try to do with him is to help put together a 'newbie' 4x4 emergency basic kit...not recovery stuff, but essential survival items, and offer it as a discounted 'package' for newcomers to Front Range 4x4 wheeling.

You folks out there that do not have a first aid kit in your rig, need to to get one. Some of you do not have a first aid kit in your home, either...band aids and a tiny squeeze tube of first aid cream do not constitute a first aid kit.....
People that do not have some sort of First Aid kit need to smarten up and get one. This is a good chance to get one for a discounted price.

oki doki. I get paid Thursday, so it looks like Saturday will be order day. I'll send everyone a PM with the amount they owe and payment options. My plan was to just divide shipping between everyone who bought something as I can't calculate shipping individually. The other thing I can do is divide shipping by the number of total items and charge per item..Any thoughts? Or better ideas on how to deal with shipping?

the most accurate method would be this really cool ratio of weight to items ordered, but thats way to much math and such, i am a group kinda guy, so i wouldn't mind just splitting amongst the ones who ordered, but i will also go with the other idea of per number of items.

I enjoy math and all, and normally i would really be up for something like that for fun. But i got all these numbers stuck in my head from work, and it totally sucks. Spent all day calculating gear changes for Body Makers(makes beer cans), and the rest of the day aligning everything. I am pretty stoked to get my kit from you though. I might throw one more thing on before saturday, and if i don't get to it, don't worry about it.

Whats your take on the NOLS medkit,
the 85 dollar one,

I was contemplating getting it myself. It seems to be glamorized and I'm not going to get it because of that. There's a lot of "neat" things in there like the second skin, moleskin, thermometer, etc. but most of that you don't really need. A thermometer is going to be just about useless in the wilderness....If they're sick you'll know. If they're .4 degrees over normal temp who cares...As far as actual meds, the other kits come with more. Also, if you're not trained, don't administer meds you could mess someone up big time. My take on first aid kits is with enough tape, gauze, and a couple compression wraps you can fix just about anything. Most of that stuff can be made out of clothing and such anyways, except the tape. If you've got absolutely nothing I think the ultralight 3.0 is the wise choice. Like I've said before, if you don't know how or when to use it without the instructions, take it out of your first aid kit and don't bring it until you know how and when to use it. I'm also still willing to offer a kind of tutorial on everything once it arrives. Hopefully I can answer most people's questions then.
My ideal first aid kit would consist mostly of the following:
Lots of tape, different widths
Some sterile gauze
Tweezers
A syringe
Antihistamines
some ibeuprofin
and at least one compression wrap (ACE bandage type thing)
I'd feel pretty confident that I could manage most incidents with that. Maybe not ideally but there's a lot that can be done with very little and it saves a lot of weight and space if you improvise. Of course the kit will change depending on where I'm going, how far out I'll be, how long I'll be gone, and potential dangers I might encounter. But as a general base, that's it.

Anyone that lives up north or close to me is welcome to have Medic drop the stuff off here at my house for a pick up. He lives and works not too far away. I would prefer to not have to handle the any money going to Andrew, but I assume that these are already paid for. I will deal with the money if I have to , but that is going to require Andrew getting in touch with me on it before any non paid for items leave my hands.

On a side note to that, you get your order only after you've paid. I'm sure that goes without saying.

I'd love to come to Moab to deliver it, but I think giving it to Chris is going to be much more economical for me :)

Everyone who's expecting stuff at Pete's....I know I said I'd drop it off Friday, I didn't make it. Some stuff that came up and had to be dealt with. I'll make sure it's there by the 27th so he can bring it to the anniversary run. I've also lost my list of who ordered what...I think it's buried somewhere in this thread...I'll be in contact with anyone who has an order I'm unsure of. Thanks for your patience.

I have a first aid kit here that Chris dropped off the other day for you. It is probably Zach's.
My 2 cents here: Next time you sell these, get all the money up front so that you don't have to badger the people who don't pay promptly. It really isn't too damn cool to order something, have the person who is offering the product have his money out for it, and then have to wait for the money...or have to remind people to pay him.
Hear that Zach? Don't have the money to pay for something, best to not order it to begin with....

Yeah....Chris ran into this when he did the hat order. People ordered hats, didn't pay for them. Chris had based the order on the number of hats that people were supposed to pay for and ended up with a bunch of left over hats THAT HE PAID FOR.
I certainly wouldn't be too damn happy if this stuff happened to me and wouldn't even consider doing it again unless all the money was up front. You folks that are wanting hats or FR T shirts even wonder why the offer isn't extended, there is your reason.

My suggestion on this, whether it be hats, T shirts, first aid kits, stickers, etc., is to do a pre pay for everything before it is even ordered. That way the money is in hand for the products, the people really want the products, and the person who is offering the products isn't out a bunch of money and being forced to try to collect from the people who are total slackers...
It is one thing to be a 'nice guy' and quite another to be a nice guy and then find out that you are stuck with a bunch of hats, first aid kits, etc, that you have paid for and no one now wants...The 'nice guy' part starts to go out the window pretty quickly...
You see this on other forums quite often, especially in 'group buys' where someone can get a discount on, for instance, rock rails. There is an initial big response and all these people spark up about "Oh yeah...for sure...count me in, yada, yada" The guy that that puts it together then buys a bunch of sliders at a discount. When he gets them, the people that wanted them all of a sudden either don't have the money or aren't interested, leaving the 'nice guy' holding the bag and out a bunch of money. Totally uncool in my book. This has happened here, though not on this scale, luckily, but it would be nice not to see it happen again.
I have a couple of products that I am going to start selling. These aren't even going to get packaged up until I have been paid....gee...sounds like the way most companies do business, doesn't it? Offering items sale on the forum like what I have mentioned is no different and shouldn't be treated any differently...

Hey Andrew,
Is it only first aid type stuff that you can get or can you get other medical equipment? The reason I ask is that I'm going to be delivering our second child at home and would like to have some medical equipment for the off chance that something goes wrong. I have a medical background from before the Army, so I'm not going into this blind, plus I've been reading every book that I can get my hands on about the subject and will be taking a neonatal resuscitation course shortly.

I think the reason this didn't really apply to this situation was because Andrew had just gotten the coupon and it expired really soon (Correct me if im wrong here) and was an "act fast or lose out" sort of situation. Then again I may be remembering this wrong. But I totally agree with ya Pete.
