View Full Version : Gas grill troubleshooting?

I'm a software guy, so please be patient with me...
Damn gas grill won't light. Full tank, valve on tank is open, no gas to burners.
I'm guessing it's one of two things. The regulator is broken or the hard lines to the burners are clogged.
I picked up a new regulator w/hose today. First thing I tried was simply hooking the new regulator to the new tank and turning on the tank. I expected gas to come out of the un-connected hose but it did not. How does this thing work?
I also connected the hose from the new regulator to the hard line on the grill. Same problem. No gas to burners.
Ideas?

Get a charcoal grill.
Tastes better and much easier to light

I have bought bad propane tanks before, so maybe that is what is wrong. I have also had tanks that worked until half empty then just quit.

are you sure its full and not assuming it is? open the valve to the tank with no hoses on it at all, you should see it exhausting

I took two tanks to the refill place and watched them fill them so I'm pretty sure they're full. I only tested one as described.
I also noted that if I open the valve to the tank with nothing connected then no propane comes out. I think there's a safety valve or something. Yep,

or weigh the tank. the tare weight (empty weight) of the tank should be stamped on the collar.
spiders also have a habit of building nests in the venturi of the burners - apparently they are attracted to the smell, so make sure the burners are not clogged.

Yup. Connect everything, with the grill 'off'. Open the valve. Close it and then open it again. Now turn on and light the grill.

x2 on the bad tank. I had one not to long ago with a bad output on the tank. In my case, however, it caused it to leak no matter what it did. But yea, definitely have to have the hose on it for it to push any gas through.

I bought a new grill years ago that had the female type of fitting that screws on to the bottle and it didn't push in the ball in far enough when screwed all the way on. I replaced it with the old male style and never had another problem .

x2, I like the control a gas grill gives me, sear the steaks and crank the heat down and slow cook them, mmmm, did it yesterday as a matter of a fact, good stuff. If I want some smoked flavor I throw some mesquite or hickory chips into smoker box. No mess to clean up after either.
What kind of grill is it?

"Thermos" is the brand name. My wife grew impatient with my lack of grill repair skillz so I gave up and bought a new one tonight. This one will be going in the "Free" section as soon as I can snap a pic. It's a 3-burner, stainless steel, with the side burner too.
