So the other day (sunday) i picked up a set of 60 series doors that Chris had sitting in his garage and I have the intent to turn them into half doors (as you probably have seen my other thread asking about sourcing them out) for the summer/warmer months.

I don't have a pic readily available but I'll try to remember tomorrow. I most likely am going to make them look like 11876
With a snap/zipper type removable window like 11877

I'm hoping this is gonna be done soon so I can (A) have something to do when i'm not in school (B) have fun fabbing stuff and (C) have some functional half doors for wheeling season.

Here's the thread that made me thinking about them. http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/144871-started-my-half-doors.html

That'll look good, Matt. Plus your rig will have a larger entry point for flung mud. :)

This is in the Yota Make and Model thread on the forum (Pirate 4x4 FAQ), but here it is again. Should give you some ideas. DO NOT do the pin style door release BS> It only works well for light doors like the cheese doors I have on the 84. Your doors are too heavy. Do the notched hinge deal.

Doors - Quick Release Hinges / Removable Doors

To get the old factory pin out without a fuss, cut it in half as it sits in the hinge, then take a cold chisel and start tapping around the edge of the top of the pin. (The hinges should be removed from teh vehicle first.) This should start to pry the pin upwards, then, when you clear the swege marks on the pin you can just pull it out. Repeat for the bottom half.
If you manage to cut your hinges and then force out the stock pin without fawking up the brash bushing, then you can use a 5/16 (.3125") dia. x 2" long grip length pin perfectly. The stock door hinge bushings are 8mm (0.315" dia). My passanger's door hinges worked out this way and it works awesome! This works so well I can hardly believe it. The pin is upside down on the top hinge because there isn't enough room to drop it down through the top due to the shape of the door's edge. A sharp eye will notice that the lower bolt head on the door's half of the hinge is ground down. This is so you can clear the pin's shoulder by the bolt. It had to be done to get a straight up shot for the pin. Also when doing it this way you can retain the factory brass bushing which will keep the door tight and have that OEM fell. My driver's door's brass bushings in both hinges cracked when we tried to pull the stock pin so we had to drill them out to 3/8" and use a 3/8" Pin or bolt with the head ground down. This eventually wears on the hinges and Ifinally ended up replacing them with some I could use a 5/16 pin in.

I used spring pins and left the stock bushings in. About 30 seconds to take a door off and 2 minutes to put it back on with no help and perfect alignment each time. Had to grind a little off one bolt head per hinge.

Here's the route I went. It cost me six dollars. I carry a 12MM ratcheting box wrench ($6 from Sears) in the glove box. Prefect fix on the bolts without rounding them off... a non-ratcheting type tends to twist sideways and round off the bolt slightly with each use. Then you just do what's in the pic. It lets you loosen both bolts 2-3 turns and pull the door right off.

Just cut the hinge pins and the door simply lifts off !!!!-------- no bolts ,no pins , and no hastle---- 10 seconds off- 15 seconds on ! full doors and a set of .5 doors------on and off 'instantly' !

Info from Mr Stubs...
Loosen the top bolt and remove the bottom bolt.
This will allow for the door to be set and hung while you remove/replace the bottom bolt while quick changing doors.

Thanks for that post Pete, I've seen it virtually everywhere and it still kinda confuses me. I guess I would need it explained a little better or to be showed in person.

I did that on my heap so the next time you see me and my rig, take a look at it. The pins work on LIGHT doors and work well. The FJ60/62 and anything newer than a late 80s Yota pick up and 4Runner have heavy doors with the balance point more towards the door handle. The older doors weigh next to nothing and you can easily pick them up with one hand. Try that on yours...or mine...especially figuring in the 'easy' part. It gets extremely frustrating trying to stab a pin in that you can't see while trying to hold and balance the doors. I had the cute pin hinges on briefly and about gave myself a hernia until I simply cut the notch in the hinges. Now it is a one man show with no drama.

The people who are going to reply to this 1/2 door thing with a positive response regarding the pin style are going to have the light doors...and either have no experience with the newer model heavy doors or have always had help...

Mine were heavy doors and I used the pins no problem!!! :D

just kidding

Unfortunately when I finish my half doors they are still going to be very heavyy, and no matter how I look at it, it is going to suck to take them on and off with one person. Just no easy way around it for me. :frown:

Oh, and for the record Matt, I dont understand that either, but I have never seen what your door hinges actually look like either.

They don't look like your Scout ones, Steve. THOSE are hinges. The Yota ones are really simplistic...What they are showing in the notched hinge picture is the actual door attachment point. You essentially leave the bolt part way in on the tops of both the top and bottom of the door and drop the door in place. I looked at a Scout about a week ago because the guy wanted ideas for removable doors...totally different story...

yea, totally different. But that is also why I have been able to stand on the top of my door, all the way at the end away from the hinge, with no bending or breaking of the hinges.

Best idea I have for the scout doors is just to have a hinge on both doors and remove the 3 bolts that go into the door frame. Not too hard to do and you dont have to re-adjust your door since the adjustment part is on the door end of the hinge. thats my plan at least

So I just found this on one of Pete's links from the Toyota section and it made the whole thing make much more sense.

That's pretty much it Matt but if you go with the canvas & windows you'd be leaving them on for the season and could use the stock hinges since swapping on and off wouldn't be an issue.
