Ive been working with a friend on a new front bumper for the truck, I had an old bumper which I messed up 2 years ago when I got stuck (poor construction, when we pulled on it it riped apart). So the new bumper is almost finished...:D My friend just sent me this picture, he says it is 95% completed (fabrication) just have to weld on tabs for the fairlead. I think I will paint it dark, dark red...
My friend (John the Welder) is trying to generate some interest in his work and I said I would help out, he is an ornamental (sp?) Iron worker, and does amazing work. No web site but I will try to post up some of his work he has done in the past. PM me if anyone is interested!
I also have some pics of the bumper during fabrication, which I will post up after work.

Truck is pretty dirty, I havent had the chance to clean it after that dust storm we had the other night. Plus it takes a little longer to clean with the top off.

Completed, we decided to wait on the fairlead mount untill I purchase a winch, depending on what size winch...will determine where the monts go.

That looks great.
I think if you mount the lights higher up so you can see them from the driver's seat, like in the first photo, you can use them as a point of reference when wheeling. Just a thought.

I like the design, planning any more stiffening braces or gussets to add more strength?

Me, I like the 2nd picture as the lights seem to be more behind the bumper and a little higher. As Rob (the antique Rob) mentioned, it will give another point of reference when wheeling. It will allow you to also get more distance from looks to be driving lights.

NAPA can custom mix just about any color.
Sorry for the stupid question, but while it looks good, how sturdy will it be with the bends up top? Can you tie the tops into the frame somehow? I'm just thinking, if you do a nose stand, won't it cave the top bends/stinger into the grill/hood? I'm no expert on metal work, but to me it just looks like it has a lot of soft spots at the top. Looks good though

Yes 'Painter Supply' should have it, or could mix it up for you. Looking good.

Gotta say that I wasnt planning on any other gussets, although there are a few places on the bumper that would benifit from them. That being said, I think that if I do a nose stand I will be more concerned about going all the way over and depending on the situation a stinger up front may not help much.
Some of our design ques we took off of this bumper, and it doesnt have any gussets

Personally, for what you have going on right now, I think it looks perfect. I'm no structural engineer, but it the design looks solid enough to me. You'll find out the first time you bump into a tree or something I suppose. The only place I can really think of that might benefit another piece, and which would be easy to add is here...

Looks great and makes me wish I didn't have a bunch of engine work to do before I get to bending tubing for my truck. Now get that winch on there:thunb:.

primer! I might just paint it cherry red...
After takling with JTW, we are not too worried about gussets the damn thing is pretty stout. I guess the only way to find out is to go out and beat it up!

Painters suppy charges $58 to mix a custom color, and $7.50 to fill a spray can, not too bad. I still have yet to check out advance, but everyone seems to think they have a good selection...dark, dark pearl red...

Kind of pricey: Automotivetouchup.com
Close to $30 for a spray can but great paint and exact match colors. I usually have a can around for my Spring touch-ups.

Not sure about this application, but i have "read" and discussed with some fabricators i know from work about bends and such, in sliders and bumpers, and have been told that if you do it right a bend however weaker at that point, if bent right will strengthen the over all design. Haven't tested it yet, but plan on it(but will have gussets for peace of mind)

It is hard to see in the pictures but the triangulation of this bumper is spot on. One day soon we will wheel together and you can check it out in person.
