View Full Version : Leaking Drive Shaft

It looks like my front DS is leaking, something I have never heard of happening. I'm guessing there's a seal somewhere on the end. How important is this regarding Moab this week? Urgent or just a leak?

Dont have an answer for you, but I will make sure I have my welder with me this weekend so all we need to do is find some power if it needs welded up. Assuming you mean the end of the tube?

I haven't gotten a close look but noticed oil in the garage and was surprised to find the leak there.

Brody probably knows better, but there is an oil seal that likes to fail on those sometimes. I know Marlin Crawler makes an HD seal for the Minitruck cases, but not sure about Cruiser ones. As long as you don't let it run dry, I imagine it isn't a major issue and could be fixed after the Moab trip.

p.s. Steve, if you'd like to, you are welcome to take my ready welder with you. Now that you have dual batteries, it should be pretty easy for you to use.

Chris - I wouldnt worry too much, mine leaks out of every tcase seal, including the front output really bad... I just make sure I top it off every once in a while untill i can get to pulling it out and changing out all the seals.
Josh - That sounds great. I need to meet up with you sometime before thursday morning anyways to get my tent from you.

This isn't the tcase guys, it's the DS itself I think.

... I dont get it
so is it grease leaking out of the slip yoke? where on the driveshaft is it leaking?

Ok thats just weird then. I'd say its residual oil or water or something that go in there. Maybe spent grease or something. I'd say just grease it back up at every zirq fitting and call it good.

Did a quick search and the zerk may have come out. I'll look tomorrow.

ah, then you should be fine, especially if you stick a new zerk in. I have some zerks here if you need one

The DS itself?? There is a little rubber slip seal on the driveshaft that is really only there to prevent major junk from getting up inside. About the only thing that is going to actually 'leak' out of the driveshaft is going to be some grease from the slip yoke or just contaminants that have gotten up inside like water.
What was mentioned about missing a zerk fitting. Remember that these have the metric threads on them. There should be a fitting or hole where a fittings goes on the slip yoke itself. Mine come off all the time from tagging rocks..

Yeah, I have to get under there and see what's happening. It's odd or maybe I just missed something else altogether. This may be another "Chris posts before really looking" thing.

Checking your driveshaft for leaks

haha, and the first thing google did was correct you!
I have some meteric thread taps if you need to chase the threads... but I have standard zerks.... which doesnt solve the problem. In fact, thats the very same reason my zerks are now welded on. :erm:

Update: the DS is dry as a bone after power washing and driving home. Zerk is fine, maybe I just drove through something.
