I really want to take the top off the FJ40 for the summer, but the seat bottoms are in bad shape. The driver side's in really bad shape and the passenger seat is starting to separate at the seams.

Like so:

I didn't want to take the top off and let the seat foams get ruined, so these came in the mail today.

And I left work early to zip over to Murdoch's to pick up some hog ring pliers. (No pic; they're just job-specific pliers.)

Early birthday present to self. (Mom didn't send money this year. Dang.)

I'm hoping I can get them on this weekend. Anyone have any seat cover installation tips?

Birthday Rob? Sean has one too IIRC. Nobody gets a birthday greeting now since I don't have them so you gotta post up and say Happy Birthday to yourself. ;)

Birthday Rob?

Not till Monday. But my wife's making sukiyaki for me Saturday, and it will last three days easily. I'll still be seven yours younger than you. :D

Actually, turn them inside-out, set in place and roll the cover over itself onto the cushion. Trying to pull the cover over the cushion is too much like work.

Thanks. That's what I did and it worked well. That a leaving the cushion on the frame. Once you get that center piece tied in, it's easier to center everything and get the hog rings in. It's still a chore. I made the mistake of starting Thursday night after dinner and "Burn Notice." Got the seat back off finally after figuring out how to get a retaining ring off. Took the rails off. Then thought I didn't need to so I put them back on. Then took them off again. Finally got the cover on the passenger seat and it's only 1:15 a.m. Should be along day at work Friday.

On the bright side, the driver's seat bottom cover should go on much quicker. And the seat backs look easier to deal with, too.

Rob sorry I could not get to them soon, but those look good. As for the backs do like Mike stated and they will go pretty fast and easier than the bottoms.

How should I know how they look? I can barely see them! But the feel nice, said DrNotAsOldAsChrisUnit slyly, with a nod and a wink.

Finished upholstering the seats today and got them back in the 40. I think it turned out pretty good, considering I've never done something like this before. Next weekend, I think the top will come off for the summer. Yes!

You might notice the driver's seat bottom is a bit thicker than the passenger seat bottom. I added some foam for my "tender, aging behind," as Pathrat so eloquently put it.

More pics. I still need to put the headrests back on. I didn't re-cover those, but they're in pretty good shape.

Ahhhhh, you women with the nice padding. You have absolutely no idea what it feels like to sit on what amounts to bones covered by a thin layer of flesh for hours on end....none. I have some of those garden kneeling pads in the truck that I stick on the seat when my rear gets sore. I have also been known to use my parka for additional padding...If I had redone my seats, you can bet that I would have added a bit of butt pad, too. I did that with the racing buckets I had in it...

Nice job Rob! Don't put yourself down...You do (and can do) much more than you think. Look at all the other stuff you have done to both your rigs. The desire to just do it goes a long way..That does look very nice.

wow, I wish my seats looked like that!! Where did you order them? I wonder if they make them for scout seats...

Got them from a Cruiser resto business out of Oklahoma, one of about three places that sell them for LC's. I'd bet somebody makes replacement upholstery for Scouts.

yea, but they are all $$$, and I have never seen them in all vinyl, as most of the stock seats had a cothe middle on them.

This is from Super Scout Specialists: All vinyl Front only (bench or bucket seats) priced from $189. That sounds reasonable.
