So I couldn't sleep well last night (seems like I don't anymore) and decided to try to find an old classmate from Florida Military School. Last time I tried this, none of the school albums were posted. This time they were, so I grabbed a couple of pictures of yours truly and a couple of the school itself and the fun we had....These were from back in the late 60s. I had been sent there because I was (surprise, surprise) a "problem child" and my folks thought I would benefit from stricter discipline..Didn't work too well. I bailed from my 10 grade, 2nd year experience at FMS, got a job in Orlando with a fake ID, and lived there for 3 months before contacting my folks again. Explained to them that I had had my fill of FMS, but wanted to finish my 10th grade. Said that if they ever wanted to see me again that we had better make some different arrangements for schooling as I wasn't going to do another year at FMS or any other military school. Long story short, I went back, caught up on my missed work, did many hours of "punishment detail" (running around in circles in my spare time holding an M1 out in front of me or over my head) and finished the year. I then went to another school for my junior year...

What I remember most from my first year there was thinking that the 'brainchild' that came up with the idea that wool pseudo West Point uniforms were de rigueur for 100 heat with no shade in Florida was quite a few bottles short of a six pack. The second year there we had pretty much standard cotton military stock. I guess they school people got tired of people passing out due to the heat/wool combo....

Nice! I can't picture you in Military school.

Funny...I couldn't picture me in military school, either. Comes from being a problem child and getting caught smoking the evil herb in a small town in Florida in the sixties when I was 13 or something. My folks, being upright and very straight, totally freaked out and simply didn't know what to do.....They figured military school was the ticket, but little did they realize that almost all of the rest of the kids sent there also had "issues". Even though I hated the school and was constantly in trouble there, I did somehow manage to get on and stay on the Honor Society and maintained something like a 3.8 or 9 GPA....

Pretty funny, eh? I was sent to a boys catholic school under the same thought process. The only thing different was the kids at my new school came from well-heeled stock and could afford better quality 'consumables.' You did make me curious to see what my old HS has online, thanks for motivating me to waste a good 15 minutes looking up bad memories. :erm:

Yeah, the same at the military school....along with the same bad memories...Not quite the worse time in my life, but it was worse than thinking I was gonna die on some big wall when I was caught in a bad storm. Why I boogied in 10th grade. I had had my fill. If I couldn't have worked something out with my folks regarding school choices, that was going to be he last time I ever saw them. I am basically the reason I never had kids....

I am basically the reason I never had kids.

That nails the reason there are so many effed up kids these days, the people that don't have kids are the ones smart enough to make the decision, the not-so-smart reproduce.

Pretty darn cool Pete. Did those chin straps bug you? They look annoying to have on your face.

Did those chin straps bug you?

Must have, especially since they didn't even hit the chin. :)

My dad taught at a military school in the mid-Sixties. New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell, NM. Fast forward to the Eighties when I was about 15 years old I was threatened once with, "I still know people there and could get you enrolled with one phone call. You could be on the bus tomorrow." That straightened me out for the rest of the school year. :)

Everything....and I mean everything, about the military school bothered me, including the chin straps.. Was supposed to help me with my attitude with authority. Right. I didn't like authority then and like it even less now. Helped a lot. Only thing that came out of this was I got a better education than I would have at a public school...

This falls into the old pics category but with an odd twist. It's my mother (now 86) when she was in college but found for sale on eBay by my brother.
