Kelly Flats on Labor Day
Looks like a lot of people are wanting to do this trail since it goes from easy to pretty hard so I figure I'd post.
Kelly Flats on Labor Day which is the 5th. Hoping people all get this day off.

The 'hard' part of Kelly Flats is about 20' long. Not saying it is to be taken lightly as it is a hard 20', but 'The Chutes' aren't all they are cracked up to be. Plus they are optional. Most of the time when we run the trail we simply don't bother doing them since it is kind of a PITA to air down for 20' of hard trail. The rest of the trail isn't really a giveaway, either, and will provide entertainment, but the high rating comes form the 20' section.
-
That's cool, I haven't decide if ill be doing hard stuff or not. Depends on how tight it is I guess. Don't wanna do bodywork
-
We could also do Balm Mountain and Sevenmile in conjunction with this, from what Pete's saying!
-
-
this would be a good chance to include green ridge! wink wink!
-
Is green ridge also a pusscake run?
-
yup, just lots of water. i have not run it, just going off TD.
-
Fun trail. I did it in the Rubi. Not sure if the new truck would be good or not.
-
okay i am trying to see if anyone would want to camp in the area with me on this one ????? all 3 days of the weekend (id probably be up there friday evening) since there are some other trails in the area that look pretty fun for saturday and sunday ......let me know what you think!!!! .....and of course we do kelly flatts on monday ...maybe another following trail.......
-
How well would my rodeo do?
-
As far as I know if you don't do the chutes or heart attack hill its no harder than slaughterhouse gulch
-
It is harder than Slaughterhouse due to the fact that there are a lot more rocky ledges, including the rocky uphill bypass to Heart Attack Hill and the entrance. It is probably best compared to the Mill Creek Loop or Spring Creek minus the Rock Garden and the other harder obstacles.
How well would my rodeo do?
We have run this trail quite a few times with stock rigs of various makes. You will drag on the entrance/start of the trail and maybe again on the Heart Attack Hill bypass if you aren't careful, but it is doable in a stock rig.
Depends on how tight it is I guess. Don't wanna do bodywork
Tight. The obstacle tosses your rig into a large rock on the driver's side. This happens a lot, and when I have done it, the exo cage took all the dings. The 'line' is very close to this rock and IF your tires don't skip off the rocks, you barely miss the big one. Your ties almost always skip off the rocks just as you are topping out the obstacle. You are angled just enough that your rock sliders don't do a lot of good, so damage is to the center and upper parts of the driver's side doors and A frame.
Meeting places:
It depends on where everyone is coming from. Some of us would be going up Wadsworth all the way, which puts us entering Cache La Poudre west of Ted's Place. Some people will be coming up I25, which means either setting up a meet at Johnson's Village Truck Stop or farther up at I25. Meeting at Ted's Place is also an option as it is also the last place to get gas before the Kelly Flat's turn off.
Figure out meeting places and times (with a trailhead meeting time included) and let people who are coming figure out if they want to meet up with other members somewhere else.
-
Depends on what way you are going to get there. Look on a map and follow Wadsworth all the way to where you go past Masonville. Then look where it dumps into Cache La Poudre and see if you want to back track all the way to Ted's Place. Best to wait on the side of the road for people to come to you from where they met at Ted's unless you are taking the LONG way via I25.
-
You could also meet up at the trailhead. It is easy to find (pretty much directly across Hwy 14 from the clearly marked Kelly Flats campground), and there is a large parking area to wait.
-
Yeah, the trail head is a good spot to meet and hard to miss. One of the things that we have found over the years is that if you are meeting someone at the Kelly Flats trail head...or Crystal, Moody or Sevenmile..is that they are invariably 30-45 minutes late because they did not allow for the rather tedious driving time getting through Ft Collins, and the the long meander up Cache La Poudre. Looks great on the map, but the stretch from I25 (or 287 for that matter) from Ft Collins to Kelly Flats takes a lot of time. Cache La Poudre is not a fast canyon to drive, partially due to the winding road, but also due to the amount of traffic that area gets: tourists, fishermen, hikers, rock climbers, etc.
I did the first rock climbing guide to that canyon years ago and spent a huge amount of time driving to Cache La Poudre from Denver and also driving up and down the canyon locating and climbing the various rocks there.
Just a heads up for the people that are going to go on the run who haven't been up those areas.

Does anyone have an open seat? I could ride along, I have not been out all year on a trail. Thanks in adavnce.
-
I might have an open seat
-
Chris, I'll probably run up wads. even though im on the very south east part of town. dont like cutting through foco nor the costruction by i25
-
I'm down for this. 9am at Ted's is a bit early, but I could still make it. If I had my choice between doing Green Ridge/Bald Mountain or going over and doing Moody Hill/Crystal Mountain, I would choose Moody every day of the week. Has some big scary optional obstacles for the harder core people, and smaller ones for other people to play on. Not gonna be mud, but I'm more inclined towards rocks anyways. I would be down for anything though, so I'm not picky. There is some great camping on Moody Hill, so we could go run it the on Sunday and camp, and then cruise up to Kelly Flats on Monday (Labor Day) morning.
Having actually done it, assuming the mud puddles aren't really deep, the Bald Mountain/Green Ridge trails are more chunky and bouncy then hard. Rigs with less clearance might scrape a bit I suppose, but its definitely doable by anyone and there are no notable obstacles besides the muddy sections on it.
